Pakistan’s New Auto Policy to Cut Down Prices on Import Duties by 80%

The auto industry has been stumbling for many years in Pakistan, as people are reluctant to buy new cars due to high prices with an underdeveloped system ofcar financing to support them. To boost up the car purchasing power, the automotive stakeholders have drafted a new car policy that proposes 80% reduction in the import duties thus expecting to uplift the auto trading in Pakistan. The proportion of people purchasing cars through a car loan in Pakistan is contrary to most of the other countries in the world. About 70% of the cars are purchased through car financing in other countries while in Pakistan, only 30% use this option.Toyota Prius fan club - logo 2
The Pakistan Association of Automotive Parts and Accessories Manufactures (PAAPAM) is emphasizing greatly on the idea of localization. Localization is the future and this is the only way we can give customers the respite they have always wished for. Some automakers did try their best to produce and continue operations in Pakistan but have to leave because of the non-restrictive auto policies. The customers are suffering due to a limited number of options presented to them. A few Chinese car manufacturers like to invest in Pakistan auto industry, but as the Big 3 in Pakistan want to ensure their sovereignty, they are being discouraged to enter the automotive market. The less competition encourages carmakersto overcharge the customers. This new car policy is being made to secure the customer’s interest as well as boost car development in the country. What Does the Auto Policy Propose?

With the implication of the new auto policy, the new entrants would enjoy 80% reduction in custom duties for the next 5 years, while the existing automakers could benefit from it for two years. So what are other reforms in the new auto policy?
    • The car manufacturers in Pakistan have to bring out a new design of their car models after every 10 years. See the Suzuki Mehran, it never aged during past decade, and frankly speaking people are bored of it.
    • The policy suggests to install car theft alarms in every vehicle to prevent car stealing which is rampant in Pakistan. Currently, customers have to pay extra to avail car security
    • Did you ever hear that a car is recalled by the manufacturer in Pakistan due to some fault in the car? May be because the cars developed here are 99.9% perfectly built. Well, it never happens anywhere else in the world. All automakers initiate a recall as soon as they find a trouble with any car system that’s a potential threat to the driver and passengers. Thankfully, the government has also presented a car recall system.
    • To bring down the delays in consignments, the policy includes a clause proposing 50% of the total amount to be paid at the time of purchase and remaining at the time of delivery. If the delay prolongs for more than 90 days, there would be penalties.

This policy will not only favor the upper class but low income families would better enjoy its perks. It intends to pave way for motorcyclists wanting to switch their vehicle with a small car as the elevating car prices are the biggest hindrance for them to invest in a car. It is expected that the Pakistani car market will get mature with the entry of new car manufacturers. With the implementation of the advanced auto policy, we might have vehicles following the international standards of safety and security. All in all, this policy could bring a healthy change in Pakistan’s economy if approved as the way proposed.

    Finally got my prius lifted!

Got 0.75 inch spacers installed in all shocks.

Today tested the loaded car on all the speedbreakers it used to kiss.
    Went perfectly fine.
