Default Very bad choice of oil for Pirius

A month ago, a gentleman came to us for oil change in his almost new Pirius 2012 Model (he purchased ~2.3 million).
We recommended him fully synthetic 5/40, but he said its expensive. After half an hour discussion we ended up to pour 5/30 oil for PTT (because he was not willing spend single more penny for engine oil). anyway.

After 2 weeks he came and said the oil (PTT 5/30) is "just Ok". But not very excellent. And he advised that he will buy the oil by himself and will come here for change. We said OK.

After 1 month he came to us and asked to drain the oil. We did. Then he opened the trunk and give us new "bottle" of oil and said he has bought it from Hyperstar (or Makro) because his mechanic friend has strongly advised this oil. And when we saw at the bottle, our jaws were dropped to knees. It was Havoline Motor Oil 20/50 of SG grade. We slightly insist him that its not good oil, but he start staring at very strange eyes and started getting mad. So eventually we poured Havoline 20/50 SG grade oil in his almost brand new Pirius.

Guess what, when he start the car, the "engine check light didn't turned off". It?s a week now and his engine light is not turned off but he (GOD Shower His Blessings on him) still running car. But now he slightly admitted that he will change the oil as per our advise but still next time (after running Havoline for 5K min.). We asked him again to change it immediately and considered it as your loss. But he will run at-least 3K on it. Uff.. what a mentality.

That gentleman is will visit to us on saturday and if i am there at shop by that time, then i will certainly take the picture before and after oil change and will post here for your ref. Dont know at this point why you are acting like JUDGE in the court who as always wants to keep the superiority of the knowledge as upper hand. Cool man, chill.

I ran a workshop in Karachi, if a car rolled in my shop for an oil change, first thing to check is the current condition (aka lamp indications like engine check, battery, oil, brake etc and other broken parts) other bits to show to customer first - this is done to eliminate liability and bad practice.

the jobs are done after the owner agrees and signs off to the current state.

Reason is because firstly oil quality itself cannot turn on a check engine light - secondly for whatever reason the light is on should be verified by the working mechanic - (its called responsibility and being honest). That fault should be shown to the customer and rectified if possible.

There is no judging or superior BS going on - its called "standard practice". If this Prius owner was me and that was your shop - believe me you would be liable to explain and rectify it if the fault was current and not pending.

If a car comes in with no fault and has some work done (e.g. oil change) and then has a current fault after the work - the fault is recent and the technician working forgot something.

20W50 is acceptable in karachi as the weather here is generally hot however manufacturer recommended oil sae is the best. Engine checklight has nothing to do with the oil as all cars, old and latest have an oil light in case oil pump malfunctions or oil level decreases. However it seems that the owner of this Prius perhaps needs a psychiatrist rather than a mechanic. I once put 20w50 in a cl9 I had and there was no problem.

Funny that you as a retail oil change service let a car roll out with a fault logged after you did a job on it, on a Prius the fault can be low oil pressure - that has to be immediately rectified and tested before the car goes on the road. It can happen due to a bad oil filter too - specially unbranded junk like leppon etc.

You just lost your brother's credibility of business, quite sad.

In my business - when I faced a customer like that I refused service - the customer is more than welcome to take his business elsewhere. e.g. if someone brings 2 big bottles of type A atf and asks me to change the ATF of his corolla, I would immediately refuse - no matter if I had zero business for the day or he's a first time customer.

Yes, 5/30 and 5/40 both viscosities would be perfect.
but Prius is imported car, so it will be better if gentleman choose to feed the imported oil too like LM, Kixx, PTT, Valvoline, ZicXq, etc.

Eventually the gentleman came to our shop again yesterday while I was at my job so couldn't see him.
We poured Kixx neo 0/20. Rs. 2800/4L.
He went away and came to shop after 1 hour. He was so happy with this oil and told himself stupid nearly 10 times for his previous bad choice of oil. And now he is our regular client and promised that he will bring his other friends to our shop too who are having JDMs.

And as long as the engine light was concern, he said before he came to us last time (when he changed Caltex Motor Oil) he went to another mechanic for some checking. This is something he didn't informed when he visited last time and got panic about blinking of engine light.
But he went to workshop for the computerize check up and they make it perfect through computer. Now the light is not blinking or turned on anymore.

By the way, we asked him to change the oil (kixx new 0/20 tin pack) just after 4K. But next time he can run it upto 5~6K for sure.

    man,

never work on a car before verifying its current state. If the check light is on - verify with the customer.

Have further studied that the best engine oil viscosity for hybrid cars like Prius (recommended by manufacturer) is 0/20.
Kixx Neo is 0/20 and very good synthetic oil. Price is Rs. 2800/4L and recommended mileage is 5~6K.
Its tine pack oil with golden writing over it. Try this next time depending upon your convenience.

i find 0w20 too thin its also mentioned on my markx owner manual but i used LM synthoil 5w40 coz of our climate is hot/warm....for daily driven prius i think 5w30 or 5w40 is better choice for our climate btw 0/20 is the best to get fuel consumption also
