Using a fuel with an octane rating higher than what the engine is designed for is not needed. However, to boost the octane rating of substandard fuel to the required level may need mixing in some percentage of a high octane component. The other situation high octane fuels can help is in reducing premature detonation die to carbon build up, but in that situation, it is only a stop gap measure before proper repairs can be done.
