Yes but too lean as well as too rich, both causes the knocking.......as a conceptual understanding take an example lets say
for RON 92 The timing map set by OEM is:
- default IG timing 22 BTDC,
- Max Advance = default + 2 = 24 deg BTDC
- Min Retard = Max advance -6 = 18 deg BTDC)
When you put higher RON then 92 lets say 95, it will advance till 24 deg BTDC and will give you a bit more power and efficiency.
if the quality of fuel disturbs i.e. lowers down the recommended one i.e. from RON 92 to 87.......then the spark timing would not go below 18 degree BTDC and you will hear the knocking sound.
The detonation / Knock sensors detect the knocking / pinging of cylinder head in terms of mV to give the signal to ECU for retarding the ignition through spark plug.
Now if our RON is continuously fluctuating like our 2 nob petrol, the Natural Aspirated (non turbo charged engines) can bear this fluctuations although they will knock too but Turbo engines are sensitive..........The first thing is there should be no fluctuations in the quality of fuel. The adulteration does not effect much if the Base Gasoline RON remains the same.......
Fellows I encountered a problem with my company's pool car XLI COROLLA Nov 2016 approx 20000 kms driven.....
Since last week it started missing and knocking like hell....
2 days ago we cleaned / regapped its spark plugs (remind you Xli/GLis are not equipped with platinum iridium spark plugs), Throttle body & fuel filter......but the Behavior remained the same....
Yesterday My Services co-ordinator requested me to look into the matter... The car fuel tank was empty. I just put hioctane Total in it and guess what?.............no knocking....no missing.....
Dear All!
Since i was a kid i saw Corollas Since 1986 till now current Xlis.....knocking like anything.......
Also if someone remembers Honda city Vario....did all of you remember its musical continuous knocking while crusing at 120km/hr on motorway and most of them are still running on original engines without Major OH after 200000 kms plus on the odo???
I think we expected too much from the Turbo.........we expect that its Turbo charger, direct injectors as well as pistons etc should last longer despite the use of pethetic fuel.....but at the same time if we get an Audi or a BMW.....Tou us kay nakhray uthanay kay liye tyaar ho jatay hein......hahahahahahaha....
