[QUOTE=nn;4819049]The simple answer as eluded by many is lack of torque at lower rpms. Find a steep enough climb and trying pushing off from standstill in most autos and you will encounter similar issue. In most auto boxes the gear ratios are much taller than manual counter parts which doesn't help.
First time I experienced it was in 1984, driving a 1983 corrolla 1.3 auto (3 speed) coming out of Cecil hotel towards Mall! It just wouldn't budge from standstill on steep inlcine. However with rolling start it would go up easily!
Have also experienced similar issues in Civic 1.8 (2007) in nathiagali, a car that can still crosses 200kmph easily on motorway!! No amount of left foot braking and full accelaration and sudden brake release to break traction to raise rpm worked. And the not recommended style of raising rpm in neutral and shifting to D didn't work either!
And than, once at Jheel Saiful Malook my TLC (1FZ 4500cc) almost did something similar! So don't sweat too much about it!
Once you are rolling the engine rpms rise n so do the torque / power numbers which helps climb easily.[/QU
Pretty much right abt the civic
Add a Suzuki Baleno in the list as wel!
