"Fleet Car Of The Year 2002" – The Institute Of Management
The new Toyota Corolla was accredited with yet another accolade today as it was awarded "Fleet Car of the Year 2002" by the Institute of Management. The Corolla, chosen by a cross section of fleet managers and the Institute’s Awards Committee, was awarded as a car that could answer the needs of a modern fleet manager.
The fleet managers were asked to choose a car based on total ownership costs, reliability, practicality and physical ability. The Corolla emerged as the clear winner in the programme, commended by the Institute of Management particularly for its emphasis on build quality.
Paul Conlon, ITM Business Development Director, commented on the current popularity of MPVs with drivers and fleet managers: "It was the compact MPV, the Corolla Verso, that received most feedback from polled fleet managers. An elevated driving position, compact body shape with surprisingly large internal space, and impressive windscreen making this model an attractive proposition for drivers."
All Toyota Corolla bodystyles – hatchback, estate, saloon and compact MPV – come fitted with four airbags and ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution as standard features. Turn-by-Turn satellite navigation is optional across the range and is fitted with Electronic Traffic Avoidance (ETA) – a dynamic route guidance system which can warn of traffic problems and recalculate the route.
Another distinctive feature of the Corolla is the use of laser etching to mark vehicle glass with a code directly linked to the vehicle identification number. The code and VIN are registered and brought together on the International Security Register. This method attracts Thatcham points which help to reduce the insurance group rating and so the cost of ownership.
Announcing the award Bridget Moncrieff, Administrator of the ITM, said: "The Toyota Corolla has made a huge impression on the industry. This new generation beat off stiff competition from the other vehicles nominated for this accreditation. Toyota already enjoys an enviable reputation for safety and security and is proving itself to be a leader in design. We are confident that the Toyota Corolla as ‘ITM Fleet Car 2002’ will be leader in its class."
"We are delighted to receive this award from the Institute of Management in recognition of the new Corolla," says Jon Pollock, General Manager for Toyota Fleet. "The new Toyota Corolla offers even better build quality, refinement and low cost of ownership than ever before. In addition the Corolla Verso can certainly meet the demand for people carriers from fleet operators and user-choosers alike."
