Digital Tachometer of Rickshaw in car

Hello! Fellows I went to motorcycle market to buy a digital RPM Guage and one meter mech. showed me a electronic tachometer of Needle and Dial type with four connection wires and he said it is of Rickshaw.

So i Went to Rickshaw market at Litton road Lahore and purchased the same digital Tach from spare-parts shop for Rs 300 only.

But now i tried to connect it with my car it didn't worked.

I connected its signal wire to ignition coil negative and he engine started missing.
Then i tried connecting to spark plug wire, again car started missing.

My car is Hyundai Santro.

Does any body have idea/experience of that type of RPM guage.

newer santros had wasted spark ignition and the coils are fired by the ECU, if you add any sort of load to it, the ECU will see it as a spark event and cause the plugs not to fire, the correct rpm take off point from a Santro is by the ECU through a noise filter and the rpm setting is for a 2cyl engine because it fires two coils only.

The older santros having one coil will also face the same problem if you backprobe the coil negative. What you are trying to do is only workable in an old carburettor engine setup and your tach is built for a 1 cyl engine and unless it has a switch to choose the no. of cylinders it wont show any sort of correct reading.

I just tried to connect it that way.

I went to market to buy a digital RPM and its doesnt have any swich for 2,4 or 6 cylinder option.

Its actually the RPM Guage of New Asia Auto Rickshaw. I have seen it in all of em.

The tachometer being used must be designed for specific no of cylinder ur car has. Other wise tachometer reading will be wrong. As@Xulfiqar said ,santro has two cylinder, so check ur tachometer to be compatible with santro engine if there is no cylinder selection switch on tachometer.

Bro , don't play with ECU signal unless having appropriate knowledge to play or ECU may be damage. And for ignition pulses output signal, OMG.
