I'm sure that brake hold doesn't just make things easier for the driver, it makes it better for the car itself. Think about it - it would be a simple matter for them to program the system to disengage the active gear when brake hold takes effect. Whenever brake hold is disengaged, the transmission goes into drive and brake is released. This way, the car is more fuel efficient, brakes don't have needless wear and tear and the driver is also happy. I'm dead sure this is how the system works.
Take into account the shut down mechanism - if you stop the car and just turn off the power without doing anything else, the car automatically goes into Park and headlights etc are switched off. By having a gear that does not hold a physical position, they have overcome a lot of issues. Technically, it is impossible to leave the car in neutral or drive or reverse when switching off the engine because the system will always engage Park before shutting down. Brilliant stuff.
