not necessarily 5-10mins,30secs are enough but in winters u should wait for the engine to stabilize the drive it on low revs till the temp guage goes up before u put all load on the engine

the car will warm up faster if u drive it rather than idling it

Cold engines cause lotta wear on engine components so its good if you wait for the engine to get warm to optimum temperature.. although you ll lose a little fuel however your engine will be happy..

Efi engines are capable to warm the engine with a slightly high RPM and it takes arround 2 to 3 minutes depends on the temp rise, As per my study cold engine has less clearances than the engine on operating temp., so Engine warming will increase the engine life and also when we just start and go then the catalytic converter does not funtion properly and fuel consumption is more, also if we drive with automatic transmission the gear shifting is not smooth, better to start and give 5 minutes. This is just my idea.I start my car then I wear my shoes and do other things like keeping things in the trunk etc then I see the temp., gauge goes upto minimum 25% of the Full Scale then I slighly move and sometimes I wait more,This makes me satisfied.

so whats better in pakistani winter mornings??...idling for 5-7 minutes early on...or driving the car right away at lower rpm after 30-40 seconds of start-up??

idling for 5-6 minutes in case t valve is installed ...else ...kick the engine, engage the gear and press throttle .... burn some rubber and stay happy

If i recall properly, my vti orial prosmatec manual says that one can drive it after warming it for one minute even in extreme weather. Offcourse u shouldn't rev it high in the start untill temp goes to optimal level.

Start it wait for 10 to 15 sec dont touch limiter wait for 3 to 4 mins drive and you are ok

Modern engines dont need warming up they warm up better in running than at idle.

For Piston engines it is a good idea to let the car warm up for a 1 to 2 mins in winter , For Rotary engines it is a standard procedure through out the year .

the important factor is that the oil should be circulated in all engine area and parts are fully lubricated. i use MOBIL1 and they claim that it lubricated all parts within 10 secs. so after 10 sec of startup i am good to drive my car but again only drive without high revs.

Do not accelerate or brake suddenly until the temp needle reaches half. ( Assuming thermostat valve in place )

10 mins r too much. Warming up of 10-20 seconds in the cold morning is okay for a modern EFI engines using synthetic oils.

One thing I have in mind, what about older carby engines that dont have an ecu to control all this. Like mehrans, khyber, indus corolla, etc?

And what about diesel cars/jeeps?

the second the oil pressure light goes out the engine oil galleries are full of oil, starting and driving gently till the engine warms up is very good practice, once warm you can stretch it to its limits.

In modern diesels the engine might never warm up if left idling.
