Nokia unveils Symbian's slick new interface

Nokia has taken the covers off its overhauled Symbian interface, and the results appear impressively slick.
Speaking back in December, Nokia's chief executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo claimed that despite criticism of Symbian the "OS is not the problem, the user interface is"
To that end, the UI has been completely revamped to bring it in line with rivals such as Android and the iPhone.
A great deal of effort appears to have gone into making Symbian as customisable as possible, with users able to create their own home pages, and manage their widgets and apps on the device.
A demonstration video shows off coverflow interface for browsing albums, and pinch to zoom and swipe controls.
Also on display is Nokia's "visual multi-tasking" function which allows users to browse open applications in a card interface similar to that used on the Palm Pre.

Looks good! But they could have been more original instead of ripping almost everything off the iphone os , haha.

Symbian S60 is the only thing keeping me from buying the 5800. It is so horrible to use.

i dont see multiple home pages on i phone + creating as pages as u like
i dont see visual multi tasking on iphone , infact i dont even seen multitasking on iphone at all.
symbian is the largest,and most used os out there ,it consumed more then 60% of market shares ,but gitting old so its need overhauling ,thats what nokia is doing now

s60v5 is the best for touch phones it can do anything!!!!!!!. !!! well if u think for a second all s40 users like iphone interface !!! cus its fast like s40 and the reason its fast is no multitasking like s40,,,,,,, . On my 5530 XM i can take call and play music in background, download mp3 file in background with download accelerator and surf the net ,,, on same time.!!! that is called smart phone.

Just look at the way you can browse album art. And the way you choose a song from that. Just the font is a bit different , haha.

Swiping pictures to go to the next one ( symbian does have this now although it is pretty slow)

Everything except the multi-tasking (which will be available in iphone os 4.0 in a few months).

I think you should look into why it is so widely used.

I really don't see the point of multiple home screens. Its the HOME screen , the whole point is that there should be ONE.
And btw , i'm pretty sure they ripped that off Android.

Actually you can play music and surf the web at the same time on the iphone.

Btw i don't even use an iphone , i have a nokia and sony ericsson.

Thankfully not one of the touch screen ones though , horrible to use. Haven't tried the N900 yet though.

Oh yea , and an app can be downloading as well. If you want to text , type one , send it off , open up Safari (which is pretty quick compared to the native nokia browser) and you're back on the same page you were browsing not long ago.

Btw also do check how fast web pages load on safari with the iphone 3Gs compared to the S60 web browser.

If you really wanted to glorify S60 , then you should have mentioned that the native web browser supports flash. Apart from that it is pretty crap. Pain in the a** to use.

yaa there are some long calls where i like lite music while talking !! and plz use an iphone and u will say "what a cr@p" after exact 40 days. it looks cools in other hands but not in buyers .

i am surprised by the price diff. b/w iphone 3gs and 5530xm. i mean one can buy 4 nokia 5530xm in price of one iphone . and spec. are same !!!!

one more think if u watch music videos ,,, every black singer who like to diamond his teeth and fit bid A$$ rims on his car add iphone in his music video cus its expensive but useless like his teeth . and every other songs like je hoo ,, wake up in vegas ,and, hush hush ,etc,, used 5800xm.and 5530xm

Nokia will come up with SNAPDRAGON within a year or so. Nokia is working on it with Qualcom.

Even then not a cheap device but the whole point of a 5530 is to be a budget phone. duh

Btw did some searching on a friends iphone. With a few taps of a finger and a wifi connection he now has multi tasking on his iphone. Thank you rockapp.

Plus one of you mentioned the "boring" black screen, and "boring" widgets. Those can be changed as well.

iphone lover? I just think it has a much better user experience than an s60 device. Many more developers for applications and much better applications as well.

The ovi store doesn't have much which is surprising since there are so many more nokia users.

Haha , the CEO says exactly what i've been going on about.

At the moment symbian is just painful to use. I am in the market for a new phone as the ones im using now are ancient and was drawn to the 5800 but after using a friend's i was put off.

This upgrade may be the deal "sealer". Hopefully they'll also have better applications and media to download.

Even then , they have not been very creative with their ideas. You're so smitten by your 5530 you can't take a second to understand that im not saying the new symbian os will be bad , its just that they've ripped off other peoples ideas. Its just candid.
