Wow. I started at age 6! ON an FJ-40. Couldn't see out the windscreen so my father's driver told me when to turn slight left or slight right etc. Got out on the road at age 9 when I was tall enough to see through the windscreen! At age 11 started driving the VW Type 2 and couldn't depress the clutch all the way (since it goes through the floor and I was not tall enough yet) so I had to stand up to shift gears. Interesting times! I've been extremely lucky to not having a wreck during the early years but I had my share and as luck would have it, it was just me on the empty road during the first 3-4 times (so no bahanas worked) and the last one was here in my current residence city, about 8 months ago - in bad weather when the car missed the Stop sign and ran into me. (No bahana. This time I have the police report to show it wasn't my fault).
Guys - don't do it. It was a different time when I could have done it and we had a 12 KM drive inside our compound so I was happy driving in there almost 3 years before I ventured out on public roads. It was just outside Peshawar city and i'm talking 1980 and 1981 when i got out on the roads. No traffic. I HAVE BEEN EXTREMELY LUCKY.
Rebuilt an engine at age 15 - with help from a mechanic of course who guided me but I was too excited to see the internals of an engine so had to do it all myself.
