Trippin' out east! Bombay - Bangkok - Hong Kong - Bombay

Sick of Bombay's stormy weather, I decided to take a short trip to the east. Having zeroed-in on ever-convenient Thailand, I thought to myself one Tuesday morning, "let me first get to Bangkok, and then figure out which island I'd like to go spend time on". Well, none of that happened. Why? 'cause I'm too much of a big city lover to let a couple of stunning, world class beaches change my mind.

Don't get me wrong though, I love the outdoors, but I guess having an endless supply of bars, clubs, restaurants, skyscrapers, lights and sirens and such at my disposal, puts a much larger smile on my face.

I then went on to ponder the idea of venturing slightly further north-east to Hong Kong, which happens to be #2 on the list of 'My favourite Asian cities'. And so I did...

This thread features food, drink, hotels, vehicles, urban sights, and other stuff that caught my eye...

I arrived at Bangkok Suvarnabhoomi airport early. Note to self : never take Thai Airways' red eye flights. I have to say though, Jet Airways' in-flight service, lounges, and aircraft, are better than its Thai counterpart but, I digress.

After "enduring" the 3-minute-long VISA on arrival clearance queue, I hopped into a bright pink taxi hehe and made my way to Sathorn Road. The Metropolitan by COMO is a nicely done hotel close to everything you need to be close to when in BKK, but the exciting bit is that the hotel is home to 'Nahm' - One of the world's top rated restaurants! (rubbing hands with glee)

Greyhound (another hound) cafe has always served great food for as long as I can remember, and they operate in most major malls in and around BKK...

Rocket, avocado and prawn salad. Yumm!

The beef with rice is pretty killer too...

Get quickly to hongkong man, I went to Bangkok last year in november, didnt like it. Especially those food stalls on the foot paths, I didn't know what they were selling but they surely smelt bad like hell and I literally vomited once passing by one of those stalls. The taxi cabs although metered, most of the times do not use them, those taxi drivers try their best to rip you off in every best way possible. In phuket, the patong beach was too crowded and dirty but thankfully i booked my stay at JW Marriot at Mai Khao which was far away from all the dirt and had its private beach. Personally, I think Malaysia is a far better option to visit than Thailand. Its clean and people are more nicer and friendly.

I am planning to goto hongkong via srilanka on srilankan airways this year. Its a shame that there are so much less options of getting a flight to hongkong other than PIA from Pakistan which itself is 20+ hours duration connecting through bangkok. Countries like India, Bangladesh, Malaysia and Thailand have so many low cost carriers that fly to other asian destinations but none comes to Pakistan.

20+ hours on PIA? Fugggedaboudit!! Why don't you fly Lahore - BKK (transit) - HKG on Thai Airways, or even Lahore - Karachi - Hong Kong on Cathay Pacific? Much easier no, that is unless you're visiting Lanka en route? Speaking of low-cost carriers, Thai Smile (the low cost subsidiary of Thai Airways Intl) flies daily (non-stop) to Phuket from Bombay and Delhi, and that came as a bit of a surprise.

The Silom and Sukhumvit lines of the Bangkok skytrain system meander through the city...

There's the dreaded MBK shopping complex in the right side of the pic. I shudder everytime I look at it, but one has to walk through the maze of shops within it if one wants to get to the good stuff - 'Toy Zone' for model cars and planes!

Back at the hotel, the view at night wasn't anything to write home about, although the minimal lighting was a welcome relief from the jazzed-up streets of the Thai capital...
