These are some of the most impractical, most outlandish, most garish cars in the world. But they're also the most coveted, most desired, and beautiful, as well. When our generation was a bunch of toddlers, we were fascinated by them. Now, once a couple of more generations have passed adolescence, it seems they're still fascinated by them. By their almost-imperious, regal, demeanour. By the tons of chrome and vinyl they wear. And the low, rumbling growls they emit. I'm talking of course about "Yank Tanks". Old relics, from a bygone, glorious motoring tradition of America.
The phrase "Yank Tank" is a bit of a casual one. Which spans several generations of American cars. But one thing which they all have in common is sheer size. Girth. Ostentatious appearance. Power. Luxury. Hopefully, this thread is a celebration of all of those American cars in Pakistan, which fit that bill.
These cars also have a huge amount of history surrounding them. Before the Oil Crisis of the 70s, it wasn't Mercedes or BMW or Audi or Jaguar which ruled the roost...it was Chevrolet, and Cadillac, and Pontiac, and Dodge, and Plymouth, and Lincoln, and Ford, and Mercury and AMC. Before these, we had the Packards, the Duesenbergs, the Studebakers, and Pierce-Arrows, and the Auburns. Princes drove them. And some princesses, too. Presidents, actors, politicians, magnates, and the common man alike, delighted in them.
The term "hot rod" originated from them. As did the phrase "muscle car". So did "pony car" for that matter. And while the Europeans named their cars after random, inexplicable numbers (the 911, the 246, the R8, et al), the Americans thrived on naming their cars with such evocative names such as Impala, and Electra, and Continental, and Mustang, and Cougar, and Charger, and Barracuda, and Valiant. If the names alone wouldn't set the pulse to pounding and the heart to throbbing...the power, aggression, and beauty of their lines, definitely would.
So...gentlemen (and any ladies out there who are American car enthusiasts), let's make this a registry of sorts. Let's showcase any and every Yank Tank we possibly can, whether we own it, or we covet it. One thing which I do request, though...is for us to post pictures and information of ONLY those cars which we have in Pakistan. I mean...loving these cars is very nice...but posting a picture of a car that belongs to John Doe, in Arkansas, might not be.
Welcome aboard, everyone!
