I guess Toyota 4A-FE, 5A-FE and 3ZZ-FE can all sit in your car's hood without major alterations, but since your car is non EFi you should go for a non Efi engine only due to the complications involved in swapping an Efi engine. If you're planning a swap then make sure you spend generously on it and put as many brand new parts in your hood as possible. D16A1 could also be a decent swap, provided you find a clean one. If I had to make a choice I'd have opted for a ZC, Maybe a SOHC VTEC, a version of D16Z6 with aggressive cam timing. There's also a non VTEC version, which is quite similar to D16A1 or maybe a 4th gen DOHC non VTEC ZC known as D16A8-9 it comes with P29 pistons for a few extra horses. @karakoram can tell you which engine is available in the market.
Note: if your priority is economy and easy maintenance look for 4a-fe engine, if it fits in, it is one of the best engines ever produced by Toyota.
