I've only ever really worked on a CRDI engine, and a little bit on a mechanical distributor-type injection (A Bosch-VE derivative). The type of pumps that this article deals with are the electronic distributor type-pumps, where you control fuel injection duration and start of fuel injection - or "timing" (which isn't technically correct since the effective timing depends on the duration of injection).
CRDI is a whole different kettle of fish however, true, it's very flexible, but I won't be too comfortable playing with it as it's darn difficult to get all the parameters correctly adjusted for more power. Plus any intercepting you do, would very likely just throw up error codes and put the engine into limp-home mode.
I suppose if you had an EFI diesel, you could analyse the signals going to the pump and intercept them. Ghuncha might be (gently - I might add :p) asked to whip up an interceptor of some sort.
Cheers!
