Default Vitz Tappet / Valve adjustments ?

    AoA,

I have toyota Vitz 2004 , registered in Pakistan in 2008. I installed CNG in it in 2008 and used for only 2 years and even in that period I used it half of the time on patrol as some one told me Vitz engine's valve gets dry and its bad for its engine etc etc ...

From last 5,6 months I am feeling pick of car is not what its used to be... so I removed all the wiring of CNG from my car engine and also did the throttle body service , I have changed the plugs as well ..but still not feeling the same pick , another thing is from last 1 year my car starts on 2nd or on long self in the morning.

I went to Toyota Service centre and they said everything is OK , pick is ok and I may need to check my battery ... so today when I went to battery mechanic , he said battery is all ok . There was another auto mechanic he was listening to our conversation and he said that " app ke garri k tappets tight ho *** howay hein , air yeh engine open her k ' kharadiye ' say sahi kerwany ho ***" and it will cost you 20K and a whole day...

And now I want to know was that guy was just trying to rip me off or what .. but all the symptoms he said that comes due to this tappet thing are correct...thats exactly what I m facing in my car...

So I need expert opinions from your guys .. what should I do ?
and if I have to do any tappet adjustment where should I go in Lahore ??

    Thanks.

anyways i dont think u need to go to a kharadiya for tappet adjustment. get it done from a reliable toyota s3. and make sure that the engine is cold.

in my father's case the air flow sensor at the inlet got malfunctioned. and there was a more severe problem: the air filter was getting burned and the engine probably backfiring. the air intake was halfway blocked.

sorry i am ruining this thread but i need the answer to why cng is not so good in this particular engine (vitz 1999 to 2004). i ve removed the block, installed venturi and put the vacuum pipe back and got a second hand sensor that is doing fine atm. things have gotten better with the engine. still performance is not upto the mark. i am thinking of installing lambda system which is doing great in my other car but my cng specialist is saying that lambda sensor is a flop in this car. but i am guessing its cuz of the exhaust sensor of the car which may not be compatible with the lambda system and a separate sensor might b needed for it to work.

^and like XXD i am concerned with the performance on petrol which is not like it used to be. and the starting.

the car was driven from 2006 till last year on petrol. cng was installed last year. and currently the tappet adjustment was done some 7k km ago.

regarding tappet adjustment i would say that get the settings restore on the factory specs. toyota S3 ppl will be knowing that. the other mechanics sometime give more clearance to the tappets than is actually required saying that its good for the engine.

i would like to share my experience with my other car a civic 02. i had its tappet done twice.

2 years ago i did it with throttle body when i was having rpm fluctuation problem from Honda S3. their mechanic although was very careful in his work he didnt do it right or maybe the engines temperature wasnt very good. it had minimal effect on the engine.

and then some 2-3 months ago my car's performance got really bad, even on petrol. it would start vibrating when i would put into gear. I took it to the same honda S3 and told them nothing bout the prob and just that they shud tune my engine. they said they wud do the throttle and tappets. this time they let the engine cool down for like 45 mins with a fan. then a person did it very carefully with a feeler gauge and another person counter checked the gaps. they tightened the screws very carefully as well. the persons doing it said that the tappets were nearly jammed and had no clearance. after the work the car is doing great....

fuel is as important as spark and air for good combustion, dirty injector give bad mileage ,lack of power and rough idling... i think injector might be issue...off car injector servicing will be advisable before you go and spend 20k

well thanks @Retaliator & @rush24 for your comments... I am not so car engine techi as you guys might are... few days ago I even ddid't know where these tappets/valves were located...

And @rush24 I think I did service my fuel filter last year so I think thats not a problem..

Yesterday I fuled my car with Hi-Octane.. instead of regular patrol ... and I am feeling lil better in my pick and general drive ...
So I was just wondering is there any authentic way to test that tappet/valve problem ??? Can we know for sure that tappets/valves are malfunctioning or its just all guesses or I just have to rely on gut feeling of a mechanic ?

    Thanks.

vitz uses fully solid tappet lifters, meaning that they have no shim to adjust - if you read the service manual you will be surprised that the "Beloved toeita brand" can actually give such an engine.

nopes - the solution is very very expensive if you wish to follow the book. The old bucket tappets had a disc that you replaced to adjust the clearance, in some cases the entire lifter needed to be replaced because the resting pintle would have collapsed. In the newer Toyota ZZ engines, the shim is missing, instead toyota has 35 different bucket sizes to adjust the clearance. To shorcut this - our ustaads simply install desi hand made valves with hand ground tips to try to adjust the clearance. They forget the most important bit - i.e. not to swap one used bucket with another one from another bore.It costs a great deal as you remove the head, install new head gasket, new valves etc. In most cases only 3 or 4 need adjustment - which can be quite cheaper than rebuilding the whole head. But the old rocker types were really cheap - infact free if you DIY

I have 1999 Vitz and had to change head valves.. 2 were faulty so mechanics replaced it and adjusted others. We did that yesterday and when we started the car, it is giving white smoke. Mechanic was saying it is steam and will adjust in a day but i am worries as initially it was too much but now it has reduced a bit. Is it normal?
Some people are saying it is because some oil falls on piston and the smoke is because of that oil burning and it will settle down in a day. I drove my car for around 50kM and then checked the smoke of running car but it was not there but now when i parked it and restarted after a min.. the smoke is still there. It is white smoke..
    Please advise???
