Thread: Vitz 2005 Auto Transmission gone probably

    Default Vitz 2005 Auto Transmission gone probably

    Hi Guys,

    Bought a vitz 2005.. 2009 import and registered... Some how the car moves forward but don't change gear... If you press the pedal it riases the RPm but don't change gears... any idea's? Is the Auto transmission gone or their can be some other solution to get it fixed? Doesn't seems like CNG installed in it and I am unable to understand how its gone ... Been to a workshop and he says probably Auto transmission is gone and repalcement cost is 40K... Its 1000 cc Vitz... Any idea's and what can be the problem or what will be the possible reason? Since I have few Auto's in family so a lesson learned shall be shared

    which model of vitz is this? new shape with CVT tranny or the older one?

    Your car is absolutely fine. It's a CVT transmission, which is quite different from auto transmission.

    Do check for the axle and check if its slipping................i had same issue with my vitz once and it came out to the axle on diagnosis

    how do u know it is not changing gears???


    if u drive a CVT u will most probably not feel any gear changes. if u press pedal hard the rpm will stay constant as the car accelerates. no issues with ur car as per ur explanation.

    Its new shape the one coming these days... What could be wrong with CVT transmission? I know how gear changes its not first time I am driving it ... Issue is you put the car in D.. it starts rolling when u press the accelerator its takes the load a bit and keeps rolling... once u push accelerator to give it speed ... after that engine gets the noise like car is neutral ... it don't gain speed at all ... then if u leave accelerator completely and then press it slightly .. it does the same... its definitely not changing the gears...

    You can't tell when the Cvt transmission is changing gear. It's concept is quite different from an auto transmission. : ) As far as your problem is concerned, as stated above by a fellow member that check the axle.

    Ok need more elaboration of how and where axle need to be checked please... What's the linking.. I have sent the car to garage for gearbox replacement ... please expalin as it will be easy to convey him...

    was it ever overfilled with trans fluid or was it recently changed? seems like you are losing all drive when you punch the throttle pedal. This usually is a failed variator assy.

    CVT car doesn't change gears, it is a totally different technology
    the person you met is simply ripping you off
    8th Gen Mitsubishi Lancer 1.3 GLX 2006; 3rd Gen Toyota Prius 1.8 S-Touring 2010; 11th Gen Toyota Corolla 1.3 GLi AT 2014.

    Not sure if Trans fliud was overfilled or less than requirement... a collegue had it so i have recently got it from him ... Car used to make noise but when we went to a mechanic earlier he said all Vitz does and its a common problem... seems like that was the indication that Trans fluid has problem... Since I never had the CVT earlier so wasn't aware of it... Anyways I sent the car to workshop yesterday morning and while I was looking for solution ... he has changed the gear box all together and charged 40K for a Kabli one ... haven't brought it back so not sure whats the situation now... Any sugesstions to avoid it in future ??

    Also anyone knows which tyres are best with 14" RIm size? I have 3 options

    1. Michelin - Never tried
    2. Yokohama - my Brother recently had accident when tyre burst on motorway on his way to lahore and banged the car on partition between roads... Alhumdulillah family remained safe but city is still in workshop from last 3 weeks..
    3. Dunlop - They gets hard and start noise after 6 months... All dunlop are japanese as per tyre shop but after 6 months u come to know they ripped u off ..)



    Thanks everybody for sugesstions and feedback ... i didn't knew that response here is so good else would have waited to Trans issue... But Vitz owners do check ur car Trans Fluid today and save money

    do not use oversize tires or wheels in a CVT car unless you have a spare transmission sitting with you. The variator constantly works on a preset inputs of wheel speed and engine speed.

    Thanks for sugesstion Zuilfiqar... I dnt wanna try something new just had a 45K teeka for Kabli trans ...lol... Any advise to avoid it in future? Since i didn't see any error for malfunctioning... How to test if this new Trans I got is ok and won't die sooner? All it gives is sound while accelerating which doesn't expalin anything to me atleast .. I am still surprised how Trans stopped working since I drove it few days back and was ok ... Any indications or symptoms?

    Do not use anything but Toyota TC fluid in your transmission and follow the correct fill procedure, search on PW for it, most transmission fatalities for CVT are by using regular ATF in it or even by overfilling Toyota TC fluid. The original fill procedure is quite weird. My advice to anyone with a CVT is to use an external transmission fluid cooler - the fluid gets stupidly hot in a CVT and the radiator is not fully capable of cooling it down in tropical summer of Pakistan.
