    Default EPS Problem Vitz 2011

I recently purchased a Vitz 2011. Recently I have started to face problem with its EPS (Electronic Power Steering). On power up the light comes on intermittently. While driving EPS fault light comes on with a beep and the steering gets hard. The situation gets resolved after I switch off the engine and then restart it. This is an intermittent but recurring problem.
Can some one in Karachi suggest a reliable workshop who can rectify it. Toyota doesn't have the 2011 manual yet and as such unable to diagnose and rectify it.
    Thanks

go to a toyota dealership and ask them to put their tech stream on it, once they find the fault and rectify if ask them to do a reset and calibration.

    Thanks for your response.
Having put fault scanner which showed current interruption to its DC Motor. Further diagnosis has revealed a fault with the ECU.
Which I guess will have to be replaced.

I haven't been able to get a quote yet. When I do, I shall post it. Toyota Central doesn't have it but said they can procure it from abroad.

capsat thanks for your valuable advice.

what I understand from 'hard reset' is to unplug the battery and let the things boot up again on reconnecting the battery terminals. Or is it something else you imply.

remove battery terminals and after a few seconds like half a minute .. touch both wires together ... wait about a minute and then fix wires on terminals ... technically any charged items like capacitors are dishcharged and any temporary storage devices loose their memory .. a good thing to do when nothing else works but if u get a continuous check light then you'll have to go to diagnostic centre ... i did it with my vitz once or twice when accidently both battery terminals were removed and i was getting an engine light error time and again .. so this worked for me ...

still i think your complete ecu cannot be at fault must be some minor thing .. why don't you get a second opinion or google forums to find a similar issue resolved ... in my opinion it is a loose wiring issue or a weak battery

on a 2nd note - also please check the fusebox under the dash on right side see if all the fuses are in perfect grip & of right rating. earlier there was an EPS error same as your vitz, in a corolla and problem was of faulty fuse holder. search threads with tags #EPS #Fuse

Naweed and capsat I am obliged of your invaluable posts.

i did the hard reset and for the time being the EPS is working fine.

While the car was in workshop, I had a chance to be on mechanic's head and observe all he was doing. It wasn't the complete ECU but a portion thereof which used to drop the current output to DC motor which in turn would cause the EPS to cease working. Earlier diagnostics through the scanner also isolated the fault as interruption of current to EPS DC motor. This particular ECU has a PCB with a chipset and as such cannot be tinkered with at local level.

For those interested in the unit price its $498/- as quoted by a Japanese Spares vendor at Amayama Trading - Genuine Parts for Japan Used Imports - Amayama Trading

current supply interruption is a safety function that happens when the motor starts to overheat, this can be due to palming the steering quickly, car badly out of alignment, binding ball joints or steering skewed to one side.

If it is working fine lets hope it works that way ... my experience says that pcb either works or it doesn't, no in betweens ... the reset has been done ... the fault if occurs is with eps motor or the load it carries as explained by xulfiqar ... getting new chip won't change things ... a second opinion is highly recommended if the issue surfices again ... for now get the tires, alignment, suspension and oils checked

here is something of ur interest and now find that 93 page eps maintenance manual on this forum ... if you find it copy it here for others to benefit in future .. this manual will give answer to all ur problems

do show it to local mechanics. now they also have a fault scanner and they will fix or arrange the ECU in much cheaper price.

Brothers who are facing problems with their car ECU, I after hard resetting have not had any recurring fault and its running perfectly.

Thanks to all the Gents who guided me to it.
