    Question Removing Catalytic Converter

My friend has suggested removing the catalytic converter of my vitz 2010. According to him the Cat conerter is for foriegn grade fuels and in pakistan it does not function well due to bad quality of fuel. Once the catalytic converter stops working properly my engine will start knocking then it will be too late to remove the converter......

is my friend right ? :s should i be removing the catalytic converter when everything seems to be running well for now?

It costs around Rs 2500 to clean CatCon by blowing air through it, so why remove it? Removing will result in noise / pollution problem and cause computer related problems, as computer does not know that CatCon has been removed. An experienced silencer walla should be able to clean it, otherwise go to 3S dealership.

No need to remove Catalytic Convertor as it can easily be cleaned by any silencer walla. In islamabad it cost me Rs 2500 to get it cleaned after it got choked after car had run 50000 km. Now it is as good as new.

For catalytic converter cleaning go to G-8 silencer walla and get cleaned for Rs 2500. After that car behaves like new.

That's all? Please keep in mind that this is the air you and your family, and me and my family will be breathing, so we need to keep it clean. Don't you think this is an important goal?

If your car has post CAT O2 sensor as well then do not remove it. I have '08 vitz and chose not to remove it instead got cataclean:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cataclean-Ca...ords=cataclean
friend got it for me from UK and it made a difference.

If you want to get it removed than get unichip and need to retune the ECU to alter the voltage being sent by the post CAT O2 sensor.

the post cat o2 sees a pretty narrow reading to see that the cat is working or not, doing funny with it or trying to do "desi silencer wala tareeqa ilaaj" will result in a great loss of money very quickly.

if the post cat reads really wild - like 0.1 - 0.8V constantly - the ECU will determine that the cat is bad and set a Check light.

you can clean the cat with some acidic solution and dry it out, if your o2 or AFR sensors are lazy replace them - they are pricey items but they are regular wear and tear items like spark plugs etc.

Catylic converter just converts harmful gases which exit from engine to environmental friendly gases.

    Salam,

I am thinking of getting the Catalytic converter removed, i want to know: how do i adjust the ECU so that the check engine warning doesnt light up. I saw a video of a guy manually putting a non fouler cover over the O2 sensor to fool the ECU, is it possible in Pakistan aswell? i am planning to replace the CC with a normal dholkee so that the sound stays muffled.

Please don't remove the catalytic converter. Your exhaust will release harmful gases into the atmosphere.

If you have post catalytic converter oxygen sensor, then removing CC will seriously degrade engine performance and might generate problem codes. Hydrocarbons or unburned fuel are potential factor for CC failure. Keep your spark plugs and air filters in good shape. If you think your CC is clogged up, drive your car for about 7-10 kms and keep engine's rpm at 4000 during the trip. The generated heat might burn the clogged particles. Otherwise, get a universal CC and get it welded in the exhaust pipe. Universal CCs are cheaper than originals.

Default Do not leave your car overnight at a desi ustaad.

@Xulfiqar this is exactly what happened to me. I have been careless enough to leave my car with my mechanics a few times.

I gave my car to a local young ustaad recommended by my brother for break servicing and he ended up messing up the ABS. He attributed it to 'jugaar' done by someone else before him and recommended I replace the discs which I did. Long story short, it cost me 35k to circle back to a working ABS.

In the process, he cleaned the silencer as a courtesy and pulled the whole honey comb out. I didn't really listen to the exhaust sound until the next Morning in my porch (where it always sounds amplified) and went back to him. He showed me the whole packing and remnants of the converter which according to him was the 'kachra/gund' that came out of the silencer and which was making car heavy. He said, the sound is now more 'mature'. I discussed it with my brother only to find the guy had done the same to our other Mira too.

I am not freakish about consumption but the one time I have checked, it has gone down around 25-30%. I am going to start searching for a new cat converter as soon as I find some free time.
