Default Toyota Vitz wrong engine oil!

I just bought the car yesterday. Its a 1999 model 1.0L SZ-FE engine 87000km. Took it to SHELL for maintance...I was abit skeptical but decided to trust the mechanic. When I returned, I found empty jerricans of 15W40 engine oil. My recent research shows the car is meant to use W30. How badly can I expect this to affect my Fuel economy?

Plz stick to the oil of same grade and dont use different oil grades during next oil changes. If you & your car is feeling good with 15W40. then remain stick with it.

Viscosity Differ As Per Climate Conditions...15w-40 Will Work Just Ok Also....!! 10w-40 Or In Summers 20w-50 Even...

Just One Viscosity Is Not Fixed For Any Engine....! It Differ Region To Region And As Per Climate Condition......

Try Using SAE 30W In Extreme Cold Climate And You Will Got To Know The Difference Why Its Not Recommended For Winters...!

Go for 10w40 semi synthetic or 5w40 fully synthetic oil..its best for year around for pakistan climate...else...5w30 is recomended for your vitz...i have also 2004 vitz 79k km genuine milage... it performs best on 5w40 ..else you use 10w40

    Got same engine in Platz.
5W-30 is recommended oil by Toyota. Else 10W-30 2nd preference (Not recommemded though)

I myself use Shell HX7 Blue Box. 10,000 kms clocked since last oil change. The oil has not turned to dirty brown yet (I know it in not a proper indicator).

Using Shell because wasn't able to find any other 5W-30. Zic had it, but now it ships 5W-20.

from what iv read on most intl forums is tht the best all year round engine oil is 5w50! now im not implying that mobil1 5w50 is the best or liqui moly etc etc...im just talking generally that 5w50 is regarded to be an all year round engine oil regardless of the brand!

For a 15 year old engine, probably with a reversed meter (when it came to Pak), a shift to a more viscous oil is okay. Completely okay for a high-mileage engine.
I don't trust JDM import meters unless it came with a verifiable auction sheet.

But 5w50 becomes very thick when engine is hot...according to pakistani climate 5w40 is best all around....or one can use 5w30 in winter and 5w40 in summer

But if engine is in perfect condition you can use fully synthetic oil for best performance of car...

It is your car your money, why the SHELL mechanic will decide what to use? If you are forum of the cyber forum you sure can access OEM information and have an edge over roadside mechanics / fibre shade oil change kiosk attendant
