Default Vitz ECU - Is it that sensitive and costly?

Today, my mechanic told me to think twice before I go for a Vitz.

Many Vitz owners had problems with their ECU units in the past, when water had gone inside the box during rains or while servicing their cars.

As a result they had to order it from Dubai which costed about Rs.15,000/- to 20,000/- for the original while the local ones being made out here are not reliable and the cars would stall / stop on the roads causing mental anguish to the owners.

    1. Could anyone explain what is the ECU and is it being installled in all cars nowadays.

    2. What is the price of the ECU if it had to be replaced?

    3. Won't insurance companies cover this cost?

    Thanks.

In simple terms, ECU is the computer that controls a car's engine, fuel etc. management systems.
It can get damaged by rainwater if not placed correctly in teh right place.
I don't know about the cost of Vitz's ECU, but it is a little expensive.
And insurance companies 'might' cover them under the electronic stuff coverage, maybe.

Why it will get wet in first place?
Even if you are on the right track, you will get run over if you just sit there.

@toofast When Pakistani mechanics play around with a car, they can screw it enough for the rainwater to get in

    Hello!
as ECU was located inside car....so in worst cases water get inside...due to silly stuff..........!
so care is needed specially when u own any Efi car......!
as talking about Vitz...so Spares must be available as the spares of vitz must be imported as there are lots of cars roaming aound every corner of pakistan....so i think in market like shershah......abd bilal gunj...probably find ECU...
well all mechanics said Efi is this and that...thing is that care is needed when u have EFi car....and plz don't gave Efi car in any one's hand..bcz once electronics are messed up......u are in trouble....so try sorting out what happened wrong and replace it just...don't mess with whole stuff....
thats the basic rule in Efi cars....!
otherwise.....Lacs of EFi cars are running without any trouble.....!

The old mechanics who used to tune Carburated cars will often be heard saying that EFi cars are $hitty and they have this problem and that problem and blah blah blah.

This is because they dont know how to tune them and thats Y they say they are not good. Vitz is just like anyother EFi car. All EFi cars have ECU's and these are located mostly under the seat or under the dashboard. Getting them wet is very hard even if you do it deliberately. Yes, on getting wet they do get messed up. But Y get it wet ? Y not care for it ?

Its just myths from da local mechanics. Vitz is the best option if your going for the 1000cc category car.

vitz ECU is located behind the dashboard, reason for this location is that it (like most electronics) is sensetive to water and climate changes.

like many have said the local mechanics are capable of anything. best bet is to not let them do anything more than what they need to do.

any cars ECU is expensive not only the vitz one. it seems that local mechanics are trying to talk others out of buying the vitz since they can't work on them. the truth is that they mechanics needs to up their own game instead of forcing us to drive old-school cars.

    @kiana @Storm

Exactly that wat I was thinking. Maybe our mechanics want to discourage the purchase of EFI cars coz then they will be out of business

Please tell me, can mechanics who are experienced on carb be able to work of EFI engines or do you have to take your EFI cars to specialized centres.

Secondly how often do you have to do maintenance of EFI engines such as tuning, etc. Once a month maybe?
