    Default VITZ Auto Drive Feature

Hello. I am Abdul Qayyum from Lahore. I have bought Toyota Vitz Model 2003 in December 2006. It has been fantastic experience uptill know. it has so far no repair work except oil/ filter change, plugs, brake pads. It's giving me mileage of 11-13 kms per litre. I just want to know one thing that is

In my car over drive (O/D) feature when you start car is by default on. which mode should be used with in city for better milage (O/D) On or Off?

Also i want to share one information that is
My car(Vitz) is automatic and during each wash it's engine is washed with petrol+detergent and then washed with water and then air pressure to dry parts and it's working fine so far so good. I have pratisced this three to four times and i have no problem with engine wash as well and all censors are working fine.
    It has two advantages
    engine remains new
Water radiator remains clean of dust and other materials.

Well if you want any other information regarding vitz you can contact me any time you are more than welcomed.

Well for your correction, its not Auto Drive, its "Over Drive". It is good to drive within the city as it provides good fuel efficiency

^he meant to say OD switched ON means all gears.

    @AbdulQayyum.

Forget the mileage. When you dont want the car to drive in top gear just press the OD button to switch it off. Its helpful on busy roads like shahra-e-faisal here in karachi. But in normal driving conditions it should be kept ON.

a very useful question. i myself have to understand the feature.

as an old PakWheelian, i welcome you on board the Mad House.

Regarding your Vitz, why not share your experiences with others of your kind at the Vitz Owners Club?

When starting the car, O/D is default on. This disables the final gear and stretches the gear before it. i.e. no 4th gear but longer 3rd gear.

Turning O/D off will allow you access to the final gear.

Keeping O/D on in any condition (city/highway) will boost fuel economy

    VITZ Auto Drive Feature -926772

    Ref: http://daudahmed.wordpress.com/2008/10/30/toyota-vitz-2004-over-drive-od/

    Vitz (1st Gen) Tid Bits

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have been able to decipher a few things from the Vitz (First Generation 1999-2005) Owner's Manual (Japanese language) that may be of interest to some:

    1) O/D OFF button on the automatic gear shift lever is used to deactivate the 4th gear and, only the first three gears are functional ('O/D OFF' legend is lit on the instrument panel). This 3-gear configuration is power-efficient during a descent down an incline or, when trying to overtake another vehicle. With the O/D engaged, all four gears are in action again.

    2) The fuel tank capacity of the FF-engined Vitz (1.0l & 1.3l) is 40 liters.

    3) The tyre pressure for the 155/80R & 175/65R FF-engined Vitz is 2.2 kg/cm2 or 31 psi.

When the (O\D off) light glows it means that The overdrive is OFF and ur car can use 1,2,3rd gears only.Better for city driving as while braking ur car will remain in 3rd gear & u will have put little pressure on brakes.

While the (O\D off) light is off it means the Overdrive is ON.

when we press the o/d button it is usually written on speedometer as "o/d OFF" it means that on pressing the button O/D gets off and by default it is "on".

Now what is O/D? O/D is usually the highest gear of the transmission as in case of Vitz it is 4th gear(may be 5th, not sure). So when we turn o/d OFF it means we r not allowing the car to reach the highest gear and when it is "ON" then it means that the transmission will try to reach o/d i-e highest gear and in this attempt it will shift up even with the slighest increase in rpm.

Most professionals say that it should be turned Off while we r driving in city i-e below 80km/h.Since turning the o/d "ON" in city will cause damage to ur transmission as you have noticed that the car often keep on changing gear when o/d is "ON".Simple is that it is unable to decide which gear to use.
It should be turned ON when driving on Highway, motorways etc.
