    Default Turbocharging a VW Beetle

Since people have been talking about beete's alot. Which made me think can someone hook up a turbo on the stock internals of a VW beetle. What are the pros and cons.

Ppl might think that I've lost it but still I want to find out would it be possible to get
some power out of the Flat-4 air cooled engine?<

    Air-cooled or liquid cooled?
What's the stock compression ratio of the engine?

IMO, If The Internals Can Take The Pressure, They WOnt Take The Heat.. Not A Good Idea For A Air Cooled..

bro its kindv impossible to turn a bug to something like a 911(turbo in rear).but lets say if its done then at air cooled bug wont be able to pull more then 4 or 5 psi, besides still u would be needing a motor rebuild for to get a forced induction system on board if ur compression is not ryt.

it is not impossible to turn a bug into a 911. here in pakistan we dont have the proper parts and expertise of the mechanics. there are mild turbos made for aircooled bugs which can easily push it up to 200hp. google for more info.

contrary to popular belief, you CAN turbocharge a flat4.

however you'd have to replace/upgrade at least the following items if you want to do it right:

    cam
    heads
    engine bolts
    rockers (everything)
    connecting rods
    ALL engine bearings
    pistons
    2nd oil cooler
    cooling fan
    pushrods
    carbs
    sump
    purshrod tubes
    gearbox
    gearbox mounts
    etc..

without doing all this you will literally blow your engine apart or fry it. many people have thought about turboing an aircooled VW (including myself) but it's not as simple as it sounds. apart from the engine you'd have to upgrade everything else on the car because it's old and because everything on a VW beetle is designed to work on a stock car. any mod to one part will require upgrades to other parts.

yes i know many people have shown it done on the internet,... but it's not as easy as it seems. aircooled technology requires certain things to be done to make these engines work in NA form,... turboing a VW beetle is asking for trouble.

BTW you can build a powerplant for a VW beetle which can push output in excess of 200hp (4 times the power of a stock 1600cc vw),.. but it'll cost alot. my super was designed for 44hp (it is not the S model) and i've upgraded and changed EVERYTHING already. Soon i'll be upgrading the powerplant to produce 80hp (at least) but before that i still have to upgrade the front brakes, antiroll bars etc. now i know 80hp doesn't sound like much but do consider that with 40-ish hp my beetle is already as fast as a cultus (non injection) off the line and through the gears.

with VWs, the more you learn the more you realized how little you knew to start with.

Not really my area of expertise but I relate a story from way back in the early nineties. As it goes, some friends of a friend of mine owned a 1500cc bettle and raced it against a new 1300cc Toyota Corolla (the 1988/1992 shape Japanese model that was the big s**t at that point). From zero point on the Islamabad Highway all the way down to the Faizabad traffic light with 3 to 4 passengers in each car. Mind you these were the good old times when traffic on the roads was not as rough and we were much younger. Anyways, the fabled Corolla (famed for doing the unheard of 60kms per hour in first gear) could not catch up with the Beetle and all passengers disembarked at Faizabad to contribute to thoroughly rubbing the flashy new Corolla owner's nose on the tarmac.

Moral of the story I guess is that instead of spending dough on tuboing the Beetle it would be advisable to focus on getting the existing engine to perform at 100%. Also Beetle brakes have been the weakest link in my experience and its scary enuff flooring a good 1200cc Beettle to think of a turboed one on our roads.

very well put. a well setup VW on a stock 1500 or 1600 engine is more than enough performance.
