Default Volkswagen Club of Pakistan (VWCOP)

Lets all contribute pics and memories to this timeless classic that has faithfully served generations. It is my 1st car memory and my dad who is a Beetle enthusiast at one time had a total of 4 beetles in our garage Here's a little history of this miraculous German wonder: 'The history of the Beetle really goes back to pre 2nd world war Germany when Ferdinand Porsche had a vision of a mass produced vehicle that was affordable to the average German, an idea that was shared with the young Adolf Hitler who himself could not drive, but was a car fanatic. Hitler was apparently influenced by the achievements of Henry Ford and his production lines - reading Ford's biography while in prison during 1923. Porsche had previously worked on some other small cars that used many elements later to be included in the Beetle. The Type 32 prototype NSU of 1934 was an air-cooled rear engined four cylinder horizontally opposed powered car that used torsion bar suspension and featured beetle-like styling.' --- source - Google.co.uk lets keep the posts rolling - add pics of bugs you've owned or own! I'll add my dad's bug family pics as well ... I guess he fell in love with this oddly shaped car after he drove it down to Pakistan from Germany!!!! .. stories of that wonderous journey keep us entertained whenever our family gets together

Has popout windows and later slotted wheels, reg no. RIC 262.

It was too dark to take a picture with my crappy VGA camera phone, so didn't even bother. The car has recently changed hands and I very regrettably missed it. Apparently a local car, owned by an 'old' VW mechanic for many years.

Perhaps Romano can throw some more light on the car's history. Not sure whether the owner's a member here.

That seems to bring the known Ragtop Beetle count in RWP/ISB up to 4:

    - This '59 RHD
    - The '58 LHD owned by Mr. Yusuf in Pindi for many years
    - The '63 LHD owned by Mr. Panni
    - The '57 LHD Oval owned by Nasir (formerly mine)

    Any others????
i saw a post-oval ragtop day-before-yesterday, was silver and have not seen it before.

    Belated Eid Mubarak all!

@Storm - silver ragtop most probably the 63 owned by Mr. Panni (Pindi no)

@Asad - didn't think it was a '59 either, except that the owner said so. Dash didn't look at all hacked, fuel gauge was almost certainly original - also had the white semi-circle steering like my 61, so I do believe it to be later than a '60. No semaphore slots either, but then I've had bugs which have had these 'filled in' (like yours).

@Parapilot - that manual's a very nice find indeed. The sole manual I have is a Haynes manual from the late 1980s, that covers 1200 Beetles (UK market cars) from 1954 to 1977, bought this from London. Never been able to get my hands on VW literature here though - owners tend not to be 'hands on' here in PK, and our Desi mechanics tend not to be erudite scholars of detailed automative literature

    Its a great manual.

One can never have too many of these manuals as each covers a certain aspect in more depth than the other. A good VW 'library' would have the two Bentley manuals, the two (or more if you want to include the Super bugs) Haynes manuals and the John Muir 'Idiot book'.

Btw, guys, can anyone source a set of ball joints and tie rod ends for a 74 bug??? Someone wants it real badly.......the Karachi market is out for now so I need help from the isloo and Lahori crowds.

Then maybe, just maybe, in theory at least, its possible to upgrade a VW alternator to higher output by raiding the MB parts bin??? Wishful thinking or a possibility??

    Sameer,

You can have it for scanning and return it back to me. I have to locate one more manual. Can't remember the name but it was concise. It had a lot of underlining and grease/oil stains as I used to consult that while working on backside of the Bettle ...................

Found Haynes "VW Beetle and Karman Ghia 1954 -1979 manual". Current status downloaded 4%.

Will update once downloaded and can burn disc if someone is dying for it.

RIC 262 is Shakil Qureshi's car. I doubt it whether he would have sold it.
It is absolutely original, and mechanically pristine, to say the least! And has a nice patina to the exterior.

    @ZNaqvi

The present owner has had the ragtop for a little under 6 months now. Car did look very good as you say.

@ all, Is Shakil Qureshi still in business as a VW mechanic?? Does anyone have a contact number for him?

If so, where is his workshop?

Have you been able to download the full manual... if yes can you email it to me. If not possible then how can we get copies on CDs
A car for the people, an affordable Volkswagen, would bring great joy to the masses and the problems of building such a car must be faced with courage.

Haynes manual is around 300mbs and Chilton's around 40mbs. Can't be emailed. PM your contact and will send you the CD. But you should be the contact person in Karachi for both manuals distribution.

I visited the Lawrence road market a couple of months ago but noticed that they no longer have VW bits. One would be lucky to get anything VW or MB and perhaps now one would have to go through 10000 pieces to find a part that could be usable. Rs 100 per piece is a dream price as the scrappers at shersha would demand much more *if* they have a regulator in stock.

I did not know one could mix n match benz alternator bits into the VW unit. Interesting.

You are very right about the possibility of a missing thrust washer in the alt Bruit has. To highlight this I was looking for an 'exploded view' diagram. I reckon some 'ustaad' must've dismantled the unit and forgot to install all the bits back.

Hope to see more of your posts here xulfiqar.
the alternator and starter parts have to be rummaged in the industrial salvage that are the little buildings inwards starting from the screws market. They have tons of bosch units that they break everyday for their material in weight. I bought a perfect BMW diesel starter which I made to work for my Golf Diesel - using the Golf's drive gear and front.. Cost me Rs2000/- My starter's commutator and carbon brushes were worn - I rebuilt the whole thing to brand new performance.

The alternator pieces have to be cross checked with a sample in hand - But be prepared to move lots of heavy metal and get ALL of your clothes dirty for life (wear steeltoes for safety) - I sometimes had to climb upper levels to rummage fans, motors, alternators and starters (being 300 pounds and 6'5" doesnt help in a small place)

If you guys want to buy a genuine type - Grounding cable (braided type thick piece) You can find it there too.

About Rs100/piece - its legit as they are going to hack them up too - Ive seen shops/dakoos in Shersha ask for Rs 2000/- for a regular 14V Bosch regulator - My reaction was - Are we supposed to laugh or smoke the same stuff you are..

btw ZNaqvi - I believe we share the same name.
