Default Volkswagen Club of Pakistan (VWCOP)

Lets all contribute pics and memories to this timeless classic that has faithfully served generations. It is my 1st car memory and my dad who is a Beetle enthusiast at one time had a total of 4 beetles in our garage Here's a little history of this miraculous German wonder: 'The history of the Beetle really goes back to pre 2nd world war Germany when Ferdinand Porsche had a vision of a mass produced vehicle that was affordable to the average German, an idea that was shared with the young Adolf Hitler who himself could not drive, but was a car fanatic. Hitler was apparently influenced by the achievements of Henry Ford and his production lines - reading Ford's biography while in prison during 1923. Porsche had previously worked on some other small cars that used many elements later to be included in the Beetle. The Type 32 prototype NSU of 1934 was an air-cooled rear engined four cylinder horizontally opposed powered car that used torsion bar suspension and featured beetle-like styling.' --- source - Google.co.uk lets keep the posts rolling - add pics of bugs you've owned or own! I'll add my dad's bug family pics as well ... I guess he fell in love with this oddly shaped car after he drove it down to Pakistan from Germany!!!! .. stories of that wonderous journey keep us entertained whenever our family gets together

    Default VCCCP Rally Update

    Write up from 16:18hrs:

    Few VCCCP Rally updates:

I leave in an hours time for BWP to join the VCCCP Rally as I just happened to talk to Nasir Bhai a while back. The just entered Punjab @ Sadiqabad and are on their way to Rahimyar Khan (34kms away from RYK exactly).

VWs are performing well so far...and are classified as "Cruising Categpry Cars" and are leading the pack with the oldies following them in another batch.

However, Billo needs a brake job since according to Nasir bhai its master cylinder is leaking but nothing grieve there. I am carrying Brand New Single Circuit Cylinder from my stash with me for Billo as a precaution along with the FUCS brake fluids and a couple of tins of Caltex multipurpose grease as Nasir bhai told me that he would like to get all three bugs (Shahzeb's Oval / Nasir Bhai's Billo / Moeed's 63) greased as well as given a oil change there at PTDC Motel BWP.

Already have put the VW Mechanic Rana Arif at BWP in line, he is on standby. If required, I am going to take another specialist VW Mechanic from Multan with me.

I am on standby, waiting to hear from them when they reach anywhere near BWP which wont be any longer than a couple of hours.

    Recent Update:

Have arranged and taking along VW Mechanic from Multan as well, just in case two hands are needed to complete the job before dawn on all three VWs as mentioned above.

Caltex Multipurpose Grease is proving to be hen's teeth here as according to designated Caltex company distributor here, they discontinued producing it here in Pakistan a while back. Only version available in the market is the imported / smuggled Caltex Multipurpose Grease which too is not located as yet but I am working on it. If its not found, we might have to settle for a NLGI-2 for now.

I cruise with mechanic in another 30mins, whether with Caltex multipurpose grease or with MAG NLGI-2.

    Default VCCCP Rally Update

Just made back to Multan to drop the VW mechanic that I took along with me to work on the bugs...

I reached at PTDC Motel BWP with mechanic at 21:30hrs. It was a once in a lifetime treat to meet all the vintage veterans under one roof that surely cant be translated in words to be expressed. Living legends like Nasir Bhai, Mohsin Ikram Sb., Karim Chappra Sb. among all other young vintage enthusiasts.

Four VWs ran from KHI to BWP...Nasir Bhai's 60 Billo, Shahzeb's 55 Oval, Moeed's 63 and Mohsin Ikram's 58 Microbus. All have a profile of their own but the real treat was to work on and drive momentarily the legendary Billo. WHAT A CAR! Stands out from all and every vintage that she was surrounded by.

First to be worked on was Billo, her master cylinder reservoir to cylinder line grommet was leaking due to the bad driving conditions. Once it was properly placed and adjusted...her brake worked like a charm. We gave her suspension a full greasing / lubrication job only to find out that she had a broken zerc fitting in her beam, nonetheless we greased her somehow. And off I drove her to park her in safety.

Next up was Moeed's 63...we were literally surprised to see her suspension had run dry of lubrication...she ate up full 500g of multipurpose grease we were carrying. Then her steering wheel was wandering like a wanderer...needed adjustment that she received and it looked to have made a major difference in her handling at the wheel.

Next up was Shahzeb's Oval, her suspension was greased too. Shahzeb reported that she was running somewhat heated. First of all Fan Belt was found loose, we adjusted the fan belt only to move on to adjusting her carb to bring her to her pre-rally glory. A real treat to watch / work on, she is.

Next up was Microbus...She was reported getting heated and running badly in the last 100kms of Sukkhar - BWP leg. When we started working on her engine bay we were literally shocked to see the seriosuly loose fan belt. And trust me I have hardly seen a VW running on oversized fan belt like her in my 11yrs of hobby. We immediately replaced her fan belt with the stock sized belt that Shahzeb was carrying as a spare in his Oval. Engine sounded lot better with this replacement almost immediately.

Next shock was to notice that there was no vaccumm to carb pipe installed. Yet another factor to add up to the reported "heating up" flat four. We immediately installed the pipe that was lent by another young VCCCP enthusiast, Shoaib from ISD. The flat four was singing totally in another tone after this installation, where from we adjusted carb and she was healthy as a horse...her motor sounded lot more of a flat four than anything else.

We greased Shoaib's Caprice suspension and I left to drop mechanic back at Multan at 04:30hrs in the morning, and to drive off Patina to join the gang back, with happy faces of VW enthusiasts. Nothing pleases me more as I sip this cup of coffee in my lounge, than to have served our friends in transit. What a night this has been!

I will now get a couple of hours sleep and will catch up with the rally on Patina by the time of their departure from BWP for LHR.

Will update next whenever I get a chance.

    Happy Rallying Guys!

Agreed...VWs are strange cars...a touch full of skill / love and they are super cool just like the rebirth.

I am pretty hopeful the cars would do lot better, drive lot better, behave lot better after this in-transit service crash course, especially Moeed's 63 (suspension bits) and the Microbus.

Unfortunately, VCCCP had no access to VW mechanic in their crew thus the state we found the Microbus was the worst...But these small fixes will make her drive much much better now. I am positive that she would make it to see the end of the rally.

The way Mohsin Ikram has put her together in a crash course restoration over last 15 days is truly commendable.

Plz stay tuned for further updates...

    Default VCCCP Rally Update

    Imported from my DIY thread:

It so happened that after having dropped the mechanic at Multan, I went through a last moment check up on Patina. All was perfectly in order and her motor was healthy as a horse. Here are the pictures from the pre-departure check up and the departure from Multan itself:
Volkswagen Club of Pakistan (VWCOP) - 328817 Volkswagen Club of Pakistan (VWCOP) - 328818 Volkswagen Club of Pakistan (VWCOP) - 328819 Volkswagen Club of Pakistan (VWCOP) - 328820 Volkswagen Club of Pakistan (VWCOP) - 328821 Volkswagen Club of Pakistan (VWCOP) - 328822

This last pic was taken when I left for BWP at 08 : 00hrs in the morning. The idea was to join the gang there at PTDC Motel BWP around 09:30hrs, as that was the expected time of the departure from BWP to LHR.

I was some 23 odd kilometers out of Multan (some 77kms from BWP) when I started to notice an echo in the passenger side front wheel. I pulled over, jacked Patina up and spun the wheel to notice that the bearing was somewhat worn out and was producing the sound. I thought to carry on at a steady speed to BWP and attend to it once I had made it there.

After couple of miles down the road further, a loud rattle broke out from that particular wheel and I immediately pulled over to have a look. Jacked her up yet again only to find that the wheel was totally jammed up. Nothing was spinning. The bearing was shattered and had jammed the wheel. I tried calling my mechanic only to realize that the signals were too weak to make a connection. It was broad day light by that time so I locked Patina up and started to look for some place which offered enough coverage to make a call. After walking almost half a KM backwards I got connected to my driver, asked him to get the mechanic and drive over with tools, especially 36mm spanner/socket which I never had in my tool kit that I was carrying thus undoing the wheel hub to check the state of the affairs was out of question for me on my own thus I could only limit myself to guessing that it was the shattered bearing that caused the hangover.

I walked back to Patina while I waited for the help to arrive and so it did, in another 40 odd mins. We undid the hub only to find out that everything inside the hub was a mess. We decided to make her tow ready to tow her back to Multan and get everything fixed, replacing bearings. In nutshell, we ended up calling a tow truck and carrying her front back to Multan at my VW mechanic - the guy who had serviced Billo/Oval/Microbus yesternight. During all this mess my cell phone battery was drained as it was not completely charged since I thought I would do it at PTDC Motel before departure. I went off of the communication scene by dropping one last SMS to Shahzeb communicating what exactly happened. I was out of contact for almost five hours while Patina was towed back to workshop where I charged the cell and got back in touch with rest of the clan.

Next half of the day was even more tiring. Bearing hunt was the toughest, but we eventually settled for a make shift bearing from mechanic's stash. Only at the time of un-installation of shattered bearing cone we somehow damaged the spindle. The new bearing wouldn't sit straight. Brake Linnings were sent for a make over (I had the NOS German Linning in my stash) while we sat and decided how to proceed. Right then it crossed my mind that I had front spindles/hubs and everything from complete front suspension in my stash from the butchered 1966.

While the front hub was being brought over from my place...Shahzeb called to inform me that Billo/Oval were already making it to Khanewal to have a stopover for lunch, while rest of the pack took another route to LHR or were falling behind.

Everything from the spare hub was dismentled to dig out both bearing and spindle...everything was washed, serviced and greased and fitted back. The brake linnings were awaited when I heard from Shahzeb again telling me that Moeed's 63 had given up at Khanewal with his motor seizing up and dying on him for good - a very bad news indeed since I knew from yesternight that she was going to break down because I had the feeling after listening to her motor's sound. I had even insisted upon atleast to let mechanic have a look but Nasir Bhai passed it on thinking Moeed might get worried as he too finicky about everything about his cars. At the time of departure I had predicted to Shahzeb that the first car to break down today couldn be Moeed's and so it did.

While we waited for brake linning, I decided to do all the brakes and the complete lubrication / greasing yet again before I was going to set her on this Rally again. So everything was redone, checked and double checked and greased and lubricated:
Volkswagen Club of Pakistan (VWCOP) - 328827 Volkswagen Club of Pakistan (VWCOP) - 328828

While Patina was being worked on, I kept in touch with rest of the gang. Mohsin Ikram decided to change Moeed's 63 motor with the spare flat four motor they were carrying in the microbus to make it possible for Moeed's 63 to make LHR. So they started on the swap over there at KWL. I suggested Moeed that they should swap the motor while I get Patina worked on and if she was done earlier than the motor swap on Moeed's 63, I would wait until they had checked the motor if it was working fine, else I could have carried the mechanic with me on Patina to work/fine tune that new motor there at KWL and later to head on with the rally with them while mechanic could have been sent through Daewoo Bus Service. He thoughtfully accepted.

At last the brake linning arrived, by the time we were done it was already 21:30hrs. Now we started to wait for Moeed's call, which never was made until Shahzeb rung me up again around 22:30hrs that Billo/Oval had made safely to LHR and he was already on his way to ISD after safely parking OVAL in LHR for a day. He then updated me that Moeed's 63 was up and running and he was already on the road to LHR while I waited in vain for a call to be made by him, just in case.

As soon as Shahzeb had hung up, I rung Moeed only to hear about another break down in one of Mohsin Ikram's cars. WTH! He suggested me to drive over to join the clan since Patina was up and running while they fixed the broken car, this time from Mohsin Ikram's collection. I preferred to opt to stay back until dawn for journey to LHR because I already have had a very long yesternight and a very tiring day among all drama and nerve wrenching break downs.

Back in Islamabad. Shahzeb and Anum's Oval and Billo reached Lahore just in time for us to transfer our belongings to Dr. Tausif's minivan, lock up the cars and driven to the Daewoo terminal. We did catch some badly needed sleep in the bus and made it Islamabad in the wee hours of the morning. I had to collect the Santro from Romano's and drive to Wah. We got a couple hours of sleep in our beds and then started out for Islamabad. Abdullah has his school even though I doubt he'll be sitting still for any learning. He has far more interesting stories to share with his classmates.

I'll update Billo's thread too in a while but I wish to thank Reezwaan for his rock solid support arranging for the VW mechanic to do the routine maintenance on our cars. He was still at it long after I excused myself to call it a day...and he had to go drop the mechanic after all the VW's (and the Caprice) were looked at.

Thank you from all of us. I guess this gives others an idea of what it is to be a VW buff. How many people do you think would have sprung in action on short notice to look at a Merc or a Toyota if it had been the case?

    Thanks again....You are a star!

Thank you from all of us. I guess this gives others an idea of what it is to be a VW buff. How many people do you think would have sprung in action on short notice to look at a Merc or a Toyota if it had been the case?

    Thanks again....You are a star!
Let me know when you're up, Zohare & I are getting ready for our leg of the trip.

We got a couple hours of sleep in our beds and then started out for Islamabad. Abdullah has his school even though I doubt he'll be sitting still for any learning. He has far more interesting stories to share with his classmates.

This one HUGE token for what little I could do to help people who have always been helping me BIG TIMES, on even shorter notices than the one I received.

What really makes me proud is the fact that no matter what little help we had in transit, during the rally, we VWCOP, are light years ahead of VCCCP as a club, both in terms of bonding as well as organisation. Everyone of us is eager to help others out no matter what/when/where/how the help is called for.

You either have to believe me when I say this or you have to be taking part in a VCCCP Rally to learn these facts about VWCOP.

Even Mr. Karim Chappra had to admit and call all the senior VCCCP executives over to the makeshift workshop deck at BWP PTDC Motel, to complain only if VCCCP or any of them in person, for that matter, could arrange that kind of "in-tranist" service for their cars as VWCOP had managed.

Reezvaan. Nice one! I guess they may now realise the critical part a Rally Director plays (woefully absent on this trip) Oh well, maybe next year :-)

    Just heard from @mohsinikram;
We had to re-adjust the timing and also put our loose belt as the one you put broke within 100km. Bus has performed brilliantly.
Timing needed re-adjustment quite understandbly so because when we found her she was running without a vaccumm pipe so after installation of the vaccumm hose in place, timing needed to be re-adjusted especially once the microbus had warmed up, which was not the case as the bus was sitting cold when we worked on her.

About this speedy wearing of the fan belt, it is most certain that either any of the pulleys is not straight or could be both. Have advised him to check and replace the pulleys with the ones from Moeed's 63 dead motor for now only to be followed by the installation of correct sized belt to ensure that she runs colder and makes it through to Bhurbun.
