Default Volkswagen Club of Pakistan (VWCOP)

Lets all contribute pics and memories to this timeless classic that has faithfully served generations. It is my 1st car memory and my dad who is a Beetle enthusiast at one time had a total of 4 beetles in our garage Here's a little history of this miraculous German wonder: 'The history of the Beetle really goes back to pre 2nd world war Germany when Ferdinand Porsche had a vision of a mass produced vehicle that was affordable to the average German, an idea that was shared with the young Adolf Hitler who himself could not drive, but was a car fanatic. Hitler was apparently influenced by the achievements of Henry Ford and his production lines - reading Ford's biography while in prison during 1923. Porsche had previously worked on some other small cars that used many elements later to be included in the Beetle. The Type 32 prototype NSU of 1934 was an air-cooled rear engined four cylinder horizontally opposed powered car that used torsion bar suspension and featured beetle-like styling.' --- source - Google.co.uk lets keep the posts rolling - add pics of bugs you've owned or own! I'll add my dad's bug family pics as well ... I guess he fell in love with this oddly shaped car after he drove it down to Pakistan from Germany!!!! .. stories of that wonderous journey keep us entertained whenever our family gets together

Its a M-Code/VIN tag, just like the bugs have in the front wheel well. It must look something like this:
Volkswagen Club of Pakistan VWCOP -374318

Or is it the slimmer one that you are talking about?

Yeah the larger one is VIN/M-Code tag while the smaller one is the production plate.

    And for example, the above 48-3-2852 is read as following;

48 = week of the year
3 = day of the week i.e. wednesday
2852 = production batch number of the plant

    Most impressive!

Now this is taking things to a far better level than what we are used to seeing in discussions. This is going beyond the 'choti tail light/bari tail light' debates.

    Thumbs up!

    @ Reezvaan

I must admit, your knowledge of VIN/M codes is deeply impressive to say the least No...priorities haven't changed, I would still prefer the 58 ragtop but:

    1. Price is way, way too high
    2. It must be one of the most (if not the) horribly screwed up cars I've come across in quite a while, and that's saying something. Short of Baja'ing it or sticking a frount-mounted radiator and a Toyota engine in it, I don't see how the previous owners could have messed it up more than it is now!
    3. Just the thought of the time, effort and required to put this straight (ie back to correct specs) is enough to scare a dare-devil, though I'd certainly be willing to save it, providing its cheap.

I would also appreciate any updates that anyone can give on the car.

To best of my knowledge, as expressed earlier the aforementioned THING is German made. In Germany few RHD Things were produced for european market i.e. UK. In Germany, the produciton of type 181/182 took place in Wolfsburg, Hannover and Emden plants. But in 1971, this particular Thing's year of manufacture, the production was only active on Wolfsburg plant making it one of the earliest Things ever produced. And the fact that very few of the 182s were produced at Germany makes it even rarer. Total German production of Type 181 is believed to be around 70,000 (50% out of total production figures of Type 181+182+Type M181).

I believe and as suggested by the "production plate / 07-5-2837", this type 182 would have been produced in Third week of February 1971 on a Friday. Plz note that the suggested date/day cross matched with 1971 calender - check your PC calenders for 1971 - exact date of manufacture comes to be February 19, 1971.

As I putted earlier, its european market version of type 181 (also known as type 182 for RHD specification) which, if would have come with a tranny, it would have been a Reduction Gear Box unit.

Thanks @Aleem1 for the kind words. Fact of the matter is that I am still learning about the VWs and it must be a fraction that I have learnt all these years.

Type181 is one of the least documented VWs that were ever produced due to the fact that the major portion of these wonderful utilitarian vehicles were produced for military purposes to which as a confidentiality measure, VW never kept record like the other civilian vehicles that VW produced such as type1, type2 etc.

Whatever records were kept with VW, were kept only for internal references and were never made public.

A VW researcher, Bob Miller is known to have done lot of research into the production figures of Military VWs. His research is the only known research and which also was endorsed by Volkswagen AG in 1995 after decades of the reasearch was actually compiled.

My research/knowledge on VW Type181 comes from pursuit of many years as this is another dimension of my hobby, The VWs.
