Default Volkswagen Club of Pakistan (VWCOP)

Lets all contribute pics and memories to this timeless classic that has faithfully served generations. It is my 1st car memory and my dad who is a Beetle enthusiast at one time had a total of 4 beetles in our garage Here's a little history of this miraculous German wonder: 'The history of the Beetle really goes back to pre 2nd world war Germany when Ferdinand Porsche had a vision of a mass produced vehicle that was affordable to the average German, an idea that was shared with the young Adolf Hitler who himself could not drive, but was a car fanatic. Hitler was apparently influenced by the achievements of Henry Ford and his production lines - reading Ford's biography while in prison during 1923. Porsche had previously worked on some other small cars that used many elements later to be included in the Beetle. The Type 32 prototype NSU of 1934 was an air-cooled rear engined four cylinder horizontally opposed powered car that used torsion bar suspension and featured beetle-like styling.' --- source - Google.co.uk lets keep the posts rolling - add pics of bugs you've owned or own! I'll add my dad's bug family pics as well ... I guess he fell in love with this oddly shaped car after he drove it down to Pakistan from Germany!!!! .. stories of that wonderous journey keep us entertained whenever our family gets together

Hi... Have a question... i've been considering lowering my 1303 and from what i understand, the front Mcpherson Strut suspension is not adjustible height wise... The rear although can be lowered by the adjustment nut on the torsion bar... the only possibility i can think of for the front is that i should get the front suspension opened up and then take the springs out and replace them with smaller sized springs...

Any one with any experience in doing that on Supers?? need to know if this is a workable option as i dont want to have the original springs cut to lower the height...

    Hassan,

I do not suggest you lower the Super. Rear is no problem but the front would give you endless trouble. Super suspensions are tricky to set up right, even to stock specs and require much expense and expertise few mechanics have in Pakistan.

A workable option is dropped spindles if you have the means to import them in. I do not recall seeing dropped spindles for Supers on the www online shops but maybe I have not looked hard enough.

    Best regards.

Ok, Had a few discussions and replacing the front springs seems to be the best option as of now... if any one else has any experience with the Mcpherson suspension lowering then please speak now or forever hold your peace...

    Hassan

It was Storm, who had his 1303 lowered in the recent past in VWCOP. You can contact him and get the idea how he did it. Also I would suggest that to look for inserts on the springs, may be the PO had put them to increase the height in the front. If they are there, you can slam it by taking out the inserts. Lowering rear won't be a problem for veteran like Khalid saab.

I had the opposite situation with my 1303, I had to increase the height as with some load the front tyres (165 R 15) were rubbing at the edge of the front fenders. Not finding new springs, I had the put metal inserts to increase the height. Now the front tyres are not rubbing anymore even with load, but the ride is a little hard. Wish we could exchange the front springs!

A car for the people, an affordable Volkswagen, would bring great joy to the masses and the problems of building such a car must be faced with courage.
