Default Volkswagen Club of Pakistan (VWCOP)

Lets all contribute pics and memories to this timeless classic that has faithfully served generations. It is my 1st car memory and my dad who is a Beetle enthusiast at one time had a total of 4 beetles in our garage Here's a little history of this miraculous German wonder: 'The history of the Beetle really goes back to pre 2nd world war Germany when Ferdinand Porsche had a vision of a mass produced vehicle that was affordable to the average German, an idea that was shared with the young Adolf Hitler who himself could not drive, but was a car fanatic. Hitler was apparently influenced by the achievements of Henry Ford and his production lines - reading Ford's biography while in prison during 1923. Porsche had previously worked on some other small cars that used many elements later to be included in the Beetle. The Type 32 prototype NSU of 1934 was an air-cooled rear engined four cylinder horizontally opposed powered car that used torsion bar suspension and featured beetle-like styling.' --- source - Google.co.uk lets keep the posts rolling - add pics of bugs you've owned or own! I'll add my dad's bug family pics as well ... I guess he fell in love with this oddly shaped car after he drove it down to Pakistan from Germany!!!! .. stories of that wonderous journey keep us entertained whenever our family gets together

    VW oil light

found good D.I.Y. procedures while browsing.. oil beeper idea is quite interesting.. a cheap yet efficient method for saving your engine.
The best car safety device is a rear-view mirror with a cop in it.

I need more pics, having severe withdrawals from my cars and the club. I miss my group of looneys who spent weekends poking, rubbing, oiling, greasing etc

Sent from my KFC Zinger using PW Forums Fast Food app

    Basharat sb,

Tie rods and ball joints are essentials of the suspension system. If you ask what is the 'benefit' of putting new ones, Id just simply say that one fine day it may save your life. And that is an understatement.

Tie rods help turn the wheels up front. They are also 'ball joints' like your shoulder and hip joints are allowing for some movement while enabling wheels to turn. Worst case scenario, badly worn tie rods can pop out and make one lose control over the vehicle. The two front wheels can turn according to their own will.

Putting in new tie rods are good for maintenance of the suspension. The steering will have lesser play and would feel soft. VW Bugs have two types of tie rod ends......the change happened during the 68 year model so some 68s have the earlier, while some 68s have the later kind. Earlier has a thinner dia and accepts a 17mm nut. Later are thicker, accepting 19mm nuts. You of course need the earlier variety.

Similarly, ball joints are also essential maintenance. Safety hazard when worn, if it pops loose, the wheel may 'fall off' partially, but enough to cause an accident.

Both tie rod ends and ball joints must be put brand new. There are people who advocate 'repairing' these but it is not at all recommended. They are dangerous and make the steering harder to turn, straining and wearing other components like your steering box prematurely.

From the posted pics, I can see that the ball joints are *severely* worn and have been repaired in the past.....there are tell tale marks of hammering, spot welding and what not. These MUST be replaced asap. Hope they were not re-repaired?

Also, both tie rod ends and ball joints must have good quality boots with good quality grease filled to protect them.

Sorry I meant Sibghat sb in the above post.

Also, the links you post show some good parts which can be bought. Get the early tie rod ends and ball joints are the same. Just do not buy the ones advertised for lowered cars. they are different.

I think he was joking / being cynical when he remarked if there was a benefit of replacing the ones that he shared the pictures of ...anyway thank you for the detailed response... very useful for the members who may have just bought a VW or would tackle this for the first time.

The speedo DIY is *Not* to be attempted! It requires 5 star skill plus in our setup we would end up with a Speedo out of calibration and good for the bin only. Where do we find a speed trap Radar??

i think if we just pull out the mechanism clean it n put it back ,it wont affect its accuracy. (if the step 12 is not carried out)
