Default Volkswagen Club of Pakistan (VWCOP)

Lets all contribute pics and memories to this timeless classic that has faithfully served generations. It is my 1st car memory and my dad who is a Beetle enthusiast at one time had a total of 4 beetles in our garage Here's a little history of this miraculous German wonder: 'The history of the Beetle really goes back to pre 2nd world war Germany when Ferdinand Porsche had a vision of a mass produced vehicle that was affordable to the average German, an idea that was shared with the young Adolf Hitler who himself could not drive, but was a car fanatic. Hitler was apparently influenced by the achievements of Henry Ford and his production lines - reading Ford's biography while in prison during 1923. Porsche had previously worked on some other small cars that used many elements later to be included in the Beetle. The Type 32 prototype NSU of 1934 was an air-cooled rear engined four cylinder horizontally opposed powered car that used torsion bar suspension and featured beetle-like styling.' --- source - Google.co.uk lets keep the posts rolling - add pics of bugs you've owned or own! I'll add my dad's bug family pics as well ... I guess he fell in love with this oddly shaped car after he drove it down to Pakistan from Germany!!!! .. stories of that wonderous journey keep us entertained whenever our family gets together

The relay you have does have the terminals as you marked in your pencil sketch but you have mistaken the codes for two terminals.

Indeed one is broken off/missing and that is the '56' terminal. The lower right terminal is marked 'F' as you can make out in the pic you provided. There is no '56B' terminal on your relay.

I do have one and it is NOS however it appears that you have overloaded the circuit that has resulted in the carnage. The load rating for the relay is 100 watts which was two 50w bulbs. However somewhere down the line VW owners switched to halogens and those too 90/100 watts each. The idea was to obtain brighter light. Among the victims of this exercise was the foot operated dipper switch and in 66/67 model cars the small button in the indicator arm. This can be prevented by using the halogens rated 55w or if you can find a smart electrician, by the use of a simple circuit that takes the load off the relay and switch. I suggest you remove the cause of this failure before you replace the relay or you will have the same result in very little time (depending on how often you drive at night)

I have been asked about the dimmer function in VW lights.

First off, lets make it clear that the dimming function is for the Speedometer lights ONLY. Ive seen so called Ustaads advocating that the parking or even the headlights may be dimmed using this.

This function is built in the original VW headlight switch. The relay does not help in this.

Grease caps off the front wheels of a suzuki bolan can be used to temporarily block the air from going into the heater boxes thus there will be more air reaching the cylinders.. these caps can be put off in winters to let the air flow inside heater boxes.. and then the cabin..

Make sure the lower holes in the tin/shield are also blocked. Else hot air would rise into the engine compartment.

A better option, in my opinion would be to use something suitable to block off the lower holes *while* retaining the air pipes. That would preserve the stock look while achieving your target.

All that said, provided the heater boxes are in good shape.....no leaks in outer jacket and good well shutting flaps......cool air from the fan does not get wasted in the heater boxes. Air does not enter (maybe a small fraction would) where there is a dead end.

A second look at the picture tells me that the stock pipes may be fit over your setup.

Your bugs engine needs spark plug wire clips. The plug wires would soon get damaged when they come in contact with the hot shields and the intake pre heater pipe.

A very bad decision was once implemented when i didnt knew much about its worth and VWCOP on where i could put up this issue.. rather i wasnt exposed to this aircooled addiction.. my dad upon the call of mechanic got the heater boxes removed and my mechanic sold them .. his claim was that "gari thandi rahengi".. it was big blunder.. but i plan to buy it soon..

I personally think it is a bad idea to plug these holes.. The air that flows thru the heater boxes is not entirely wasted when the the hot air is not being utilized to heat the cabin. It still does something useful. It takes the excess heat away from the cylinder heads that are in close proximity to the heater boxes. By NOT allowing the air to flow thru the heater boxes you are building up the heat in those and the heat gets transferred to the heads so the heads run hotter. In some ways I do agree with the claim that by removing heater boxes and replacing them with J-tubes you can run the engine a tad cooler. However you lose the great heating you get in the winters that an aircooled VW is capable of providing if the boxes are in place.
