Default Volkswagen Club of Pakistan (VWCOP)

Lets all contribute pics and memories to this timeless classic that has faithfully served generations. It is my 1st car memory and my dad who is a Beetle enthusiast at one time had a total of 4 beetles in our garage Here's a little history of this miraculous German wonder: 'The history of the Beetle really goes back to pre 2nd world war Germany when Ferdinand Porsche had a vision of a mass produced vehicle that was affordable to the average German, an idea that was shared with the young Adolf Hitler who himself could not drive, but was a car fanatic. Hitler was apparently influenced by the achievements of Henry Ford and his production lines - reading Ford's biography while in prison during 1923. Porsche had previously worked on some other small cars that used many elements later to be included in the Beetle. The Type 32 prototype NSU of 1934 was an air-cooled rear engined four cylinder horizontally opposed powered car that used torsion bar suspension and featured beetle-like styling.' --- source - Google.co.uk lets keep the posts rolling - add pics of bugs you've owned or own! I'll add my dad's bug family pics as well ... I guess he fell in love with this oddly shaped car after he drove it down to Pakistan from Germany!!!! .. stories of that wonderous journey keep us entertained whenever our family gets together

    @UMER127
none of the experts like Asad, Storm, DP etc thinks that AC is not a workable option.
they belive that if a car is built properly, AC will run as gud as on any other car.

experts correct me if im wrong.

    @ Umer127 and msm

An AC 'MAY' be a workable option. I am not recommending it strongly as I have not tried it. I wont recommend anything blindly without having first hand experience with it.

I have done a bit of research and even collected parts as I plan to install one in my 1300 68 bug. But this would be in the somewhat distant future.

I have discussed with some good AC installation guys and I have seen a mixed response. We have to take thier opinion with a pinch of salt as they would be keen to slap one on as it means business to them.

Syed sahab, a respected VW mechanic/spare parts shop owner says that you can put one on even in a 1200cc bug. He claims there are no issues with a properly done job. He even recommends what brand and model of compressor to use.

I have seen VWs with ACs but most had the compressor drive belt off. On inquiry the owners could not come up with a good answer. Although each swore there were no issues.

If anyone here has an AC in thier regularly used VW please share your first hand experience.

    Best regards to all.

Just to add to the above discussion:

VWs did come with ACs initially as an accessory starting from the early sixties and then as factory options in the late Supers.

A good AC shop guy informed me that the compressors used were specially made for VWs and required a lot less power. I cant say if we can get a similar or maybe better alternative from the line of modern compressors now available.

    @ psyborg

Wanna give it a shot???? Orders are waitin!!

    @ au

This is just the equivalent of whats referred to as a 'hang on AC unit' commonly here.

Im not very sure but it must be having a blower motor ( you can see one in the mid pic) and *probably* a cooling radiator sort of thingie inside.

You do need more components to finish the setup.....compressor, outside mounted cooler etc etc.

    Any input from anyone??

Here is a cut n paste of the list I was composing for Dp:

@ devilspassion (and whoever is planning a brake overhaul on their bug)

Here is a list of parts you might be needing:

(I always get all the parts that could possibly turn out bad as then I don’t have to run to get anything mid procedure. Any remaining parts can be returned or kept in your ‘spares bin’ for future needs)

1--Brake fluid. At least two bottles as you would be bleeding the system too. Always buy the same brand that you have been putting over the years. A change of brand can result in leakage of the rubber seals.

2—Brake reservoir pipe. You get this from Cheap autos/local VW store. A length of around two to three feet should be sufficient.

3—Jubilee clips for the reservoir pipe. At least six to eight.

4—Plastic nipple which makes connection to the master cylinder port possible. These are rarely bad but if it is then you get it from only the VW shop. You need two if the master cylinder is a dual circuit one.

5—Rubber grommet for the plastic nipple to go into. Again two if dual circuit.

6—Master cylinder kit. In the worst case scenario you may need a new cylinder but lets not be too pessimistic.

7—Brake slave/wheel cylinder washers. Set of eight, two for each wheel. Buy the correct ones for your model as there are differences.

8—Slave cylinder bleeding nipples. These might break while the brakes are being bled as they can be jammed quite hard. Buy four as they would only cost around Rs 100/- but save you a BIG headache.

9—Brake shoe linings. A set of Brazil made linings would be nice. Buy the ones correct for your model along with the rivets. You can then get it riveted from a shop near you or if you are too adventurous do it yourself!

10—locking pins for the rear drum nut. You may be able to use the old ones but why take the risk?

11—we might end up damaging some hard brake lines, or find one leaking but we can get those from nearby ordinary spares shops.

Tools and stuff you would need:

Basic hand tools…..assorted spanners, screw drivers, a medium sized pipe wrench….comes in handy for stubborn slave cylinder nipples.

You would also need some emery/sandpaper, rags and grease.

One special tool you need is a 36/38 mm socket wrench along with a good handle and cheater pipe. Essential for the rear drums if you don’t fancy the desi chisel and hammer approach. Ill lend mine for this project so don’t worry about finding one. Just remind me to bring it along please.

Lets see…have I forgotten anything??? Ah yes…..gallons of ice cream of assorted flavors for the supervisor!!
