    Default Issue with VW Beetle 1974.

    Hi Guys, We have an issue with the 1200CC VW Beetle.
    The car is getting extremely hot. Its the Aircooled orignal engine.
    The Oil lights turn on and the oil become very thin. Any one with any idea how to prevent this.
    We are using Caltex Castrol GTX oil. (20-50).
    Any one with any idea how we can resolve this issue.
    @Storm or any one else.

    Is the engine weak ?? If not, is the FAN/rotar at the back of the dynamo/generator running perfectly ??
    As for oil I have always found PSO(GTX) to be a good oil for old VW's.

    Engine is not weak as the car is not consuming any oil.
    Apparently its running fine without an issue. Anyway any specfic way of checking it.

    check the cooling fan cover and ducts as well
    i agree about Castro GTX it always worked best with our VW microbus in Faisalabad when it was on petrol.

    @xain,

    use the oil mentioned by @aridsoul
    i used the same with my 72, 1200cc beetle.

    b.t.w i also faced the same problem in june and july but the mechanic said nothing will happen, the car was tuned fine.
    and nothing did actually happen. it went fine
    Life is short and very unpredictable just like a Quarter mile .....

    As mentined by the members befor it seems like your fan might be blocked/hindered or that your timing might be off, leading to the car running hotter (try to check the plugs for tell tale signs).

    Believe it or not i'm currently using delo gold in my 1500 (diesel oil allows you to run hotter & doesn't thin as quickly), but PSO GTX is a great oil for beetles.

    Worst case scenario your oil pump might be blocked or not running properly.

    Is using Delo Gold a good idea. What are the disadvantages of using the Diesel oil.
    Regarding the oil pump. We have seen it by opening the cover and when you race it the oil floaded upward and according to mechanic the oil pump is working fine. Also when you race the car the light turned off.

    Its probably a short dunno much about beetles but its what Spectra said. Check the ducts and heat shield. Apparently a mis fit will heat up the car.

    It doesn't really make a huge difference since the engines are so Dheet. I'm getting mine rebuilt in the winters anyways.

    If you don't have anaything constructive to say then perhaps it's better not to say anything (unless you are just trying to artificially raise your post count).

    Afterall you don't hear us passing out of context comments about a cartain 1999 Honda EJ6 Civic EXG & 2005 Nissan Murano Xover SUV.

    Ok I have two options now.
    1- Use Delo Gold
    2-Use Castrol GTX + STP.
    Which one you recommend.

    i've kept a vw beetle and at idling speed the oil light used to flicker - nothing ever happened to the engine. thicker oil should cure this but then your fuel consumption may increase. get your oil pump checked as it may be clogged.
    Speed thrills and kills better than anything else.

    It'd probably be wiser to use Castrol GTX + STP. Only use Delo if you are going to rebuild the engine (within 6-8 months).

    @c123pk
    how very creative of you.... Ferdinand Porsche was a fool not to have thought of that.

    Finally the issue of the Beetle Heat up is solved.
    Following steps have been taken.
    1- Added very little STP in the oil aound 200 ml.
    2-Changed the oil to Castrol CXT Formula.
    3-Changed the Back cover of the beetle. The orignal cover is without any grills where as this new one which is a courtesy of a friend has a grill in it and that has made all the difference .Probably 1200 CC comes with a cover without a grill and 1300 CC and 1600 CC has grill in it.
    No issue of the Oil light any more. The cover which used to be very hot is now pretty cold.
    Due to this the engine has got a tremendous pick which was previously missing due to overheating.
    Thanks a lot to all of you guys for your great help.
