Yamaha Japan may scrap plans for plant in Karachi
TOKYO: Yamaha Motors Japan may cancel its 150 million dollars investment plan to set up motorcycles manufacturing unit in Pakistan due to bureaucratic hurdles, sources close to the matter told The News on Friday.

Even President Asif Ali Zardari failed to get implemented his own orders to facilitate Yamaha Motors in establishing its unit in Pakistan, sources said.

Yamaha’s plan to set up its manufacturing plant in Karachi, for local sales and exports, was delayed due to bureaucratic snags and opposition from Dawood Yamaha, the Pakistani franchise holder.

India has started talks with Yamaha to review its plan and initiate the same project in India, sources said.

Yamaha may consider Indian offer due to cold response from Pakistan, sources said.

Yamaha was waiting for a response from Pakistan for last three years, sources said. During this period Yamaha’s senior officials met with President Zardari at least twice, and President Zardari welcomed them to invest in Pakistan but the bureaucracy created hurdles for Japanese automobile giant to initiate the project in Pakistan.

Yamaha Motor President Hiroyuki Yanagi met with President Zardari during his visit to Japan in February. Yanagi requested Zardari to remove the hurdles to Yamaha Japan’s entry in Pakistan, sources reminded.

Minister of Industries Mir Hazar Khan Bijarani, Chairman Board of Investment Saleem Mandviwala, Secretary Industries, and other officials were present at the said meeting where President Zardari issued orders to all the concerned people to immediately help Yamaha start its project in Pakistan. But the situation remains unchanged even after four months, sources said.

Yanagi had told the Pakistani authorities that his company would spend $150 million for setting up a new plant at 50 acres plot in Bin Qasim near Karachi. He said Yamaha would bring advanced technology to Pakistan where initially 22,000 motorcycles of 125-150 cc, per year, would be manufactured in the factory with electronic fuel injection (EFI) engines and during the next ten years its production would reach to 750,000.

The company would also provide comprehensive training and technical education to its employees, dealers, and vendors.

Yanagi had told the Pakistani dignitaries that 45,000 people would get direct and indirect employment from the said project, sources recalled.

Actually Zardari is interested to implement this plan in Pakistan but local manufacturing industry is the main force which is restricting this plan because they are demanding the same business terms those Zardari have sold / offered to the YMC Japan.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" />
As per plan YMC will setup a plant but they can import motorcycle parts from India and assemble it for neighbouring countries and may be import Indian products as CBU, SKD or CKD to Pakistan. There are a hell of benefits on import policies for YMC, so same package is demanded by local manufacturing industry but not given yet that’s why this plan is on hold.
Local manufacturing industry has invested more in Pakistan as compare to the investment YMC is giving to Pakistan so local industry deserves first then any outsider.
Existing local industry is providing the job opportunities and contributing in the GDP growth and deserve some relieves in taxes, fuel prices and un shunt electricity.
As far as modern technology and most modern models are concerned it depends on the customer choice because buying power of the customer is not in good percentage at present. Presently 49% bikes are being sold by the Japanese companies and 51% bikes are being sold by the local assemblers who are making only 70cc in cheap prices so the economy structure needs reform overall so that buying power of a common customer can be increased and any company can bring technology on he basis of customer base, no company can invest on a very small percentage of the customer.
Overall Pakistan motorcycle sale history show only 10% share of 125 cc, almost 10% share of 100cc and 80% market share of 70cc where as 70cc does not exists in the world not even in African countries or third world.

got it from another thread on pw,,
will search for original source and post it as soon as i find it,,
ISLAMABAD:

President Asif Ali Zardari on Friday directed the authorities to accelerate work on setting up a motorcycle manufacturing plant to ease pressure on public transport and provide low-income groups with an economical and affordable means of transport.

This he said during a meeting at the President’s House to review progress on establishing a motorcycle plant in Karachi by Japanese manufacturer Yamaha.

Briefing the media, President’s spokesman Farhatullah Babar said during the president’s visit to Japan and his meeting with investors and manufacturers there, Yamaha had shown interest in setting up a motorcycle manufacturing plant in Pakistan. He said Yamaha teams had already visited Pakistan to firm up plans and proposals for producing motorcycles in Karachi.

In the meeting, Zardari called for encouraging foreign investment and extending all possible facilities to foreign investors to take advantage of investment opportunities in the country.

He said motorbike was an economical means of transport for low-income people and directed that all hurdles in the way of Yamaha investment and setting up its manufacturing plant should be removed on priority basis and the process should be stepped up.

He said the government was working hard to transform the country into one of the most attractive and business-friendly places in the region, adding the government would simplify procedures to facilitate investors and businessmen.
