Lahore to Get Another Signal-Free Corridor
The Punjab government has decided to give another signal-free corridor to the people of Lahore. The provincial government has announced to build a corridor between Centre Point Gulberg and DHA to ease the traffic flow. The residents of these areas face traffic jams on a regular basis. Although the government has constructed an underpass at Firdous Market to resolve the issue, however, further needed to be done.
Where Signal-Free Corridor Will be Built
According to details, the government will build a one-way flyover at Ghora Chowk and Calvary Ground. Meanwhile, an underpass will be constructed at Khalid Butt Chowk. This initial corridor will result in non-stop traffic flow from Gulberg to DHA.
In the next phase, the government will build a three-lane single-sided flyover at Ghora Chowk, starting from Cavalry Ground to Defense turn. Meanwhile, another two-way underpass along a four-lane dual carriageway will also be built at Khalid Butt Chowk.
The project was passed during a meeting headed by Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar. The chief minister advised Standing Cabinet Committee on Finance to list it in the annual development program to obtain the funds.
Firdous Market Underpass
In November 2020, Firdous Market Underpass was inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Punjab, Usman Buzdar. The Firdous Market Underpass is known as Lal Shahbaz Qalandar Underpass and facilitates around 91,000 vehicles daily. It provides a signal-free passageway to residents of Lahore crossing Firdous Market.
The construction work on the project, named Lal Shahbaz Qalandar Underpass, was started in May 2020. The underpass was supposed to complete in within 90 days, but it was delayed by three months.
The earlier estimated cost of the complete project is Rs1.76 billion, including land acquisition and construction. However, the Punjab government awarded the contract for only Rs990 million. The move saved Rs130 million of public money.
What do you think about the new corridor? Do you think it will lead to the free flow of traffic?
