Things You Can Say While Playing Cricket & Driving a Car
Cricket and driving are two things every Pakistani boy loves! Whether you’re smashing a six or cruising on GT Road, you’ll hear some of the same phrases in both situations. It’s funny how cricket commentary and driving instructions often sound alike! Let’s check out some things you can say while playing cricket and driving a car.
Speed & Acceleration
Both cricket and driving require the right speed at the right time.
- “Haath Hola/Halka Rakh!” – Works when your friend is smashing sixes all over the ground and feeling like Fakhar Zaman or your same friend is driving rather rashly on the road, so you just have to remind them, “Bhai, Halka Hath Rakh,” there is no rush, be a chill guy for a moment.
- “Bhai ki Speed Check Kar!” – When you are driving fast either on an empty road or a rushy road or when you are throwing some steamers at the opposition embodying the soul of Shoaib Akhtar, then this sentence comes out, “Bhai ki Speed Check Kar” because “They Can’t See Me.”
Braking & Stopping
Stopping at the right time is just as important as knowing when to move.
- “O, Yaaar, Bach Gaya” – Missing a run-out by inches in a crucial match with a rival team from the other street of your Mohalla/Town or barely avoiding a fender bender, a close call it is and, as they also as,y “Baal Baal Bach Gaya” or as Ian Smith roared in Cricket World Cup 2023 final “With the Barest of Margins.”
- “Rok lay yaar!” – Whether asking your friend in a crucial situation in a match to stop playing rash shorts and trying to be a hitter on every ball, like Iftikhar Ahmad or your same friend is overspeeding, or you reached your drop spot, but your driver friend keeps going, so you exclaim, “Rok Lay Bhai, Kya Jaldi Hay Tujhay?”
Maneuvering & Strategy
Smart moves in both cricket and driving make all the difference.
- “Gap Say Nikaal!” – When you are hitting well, but it is going straight to the fielder, the batsman on the other end of the pitch calmly advises you to wait and play in the gap, envision yourself as Inzamaul Haq. The same can be said when you are stuck in traffic, either on a car or a bike, and you see a gap; the advice works the same.
- “Ooper say Ghuma Lay!” – When the match has just started, you are playing club cricket, and the fielding is inside the circle. Hence, you just have to play a lofted shot, and there goes the ball over the head of the fielder, or you spot your destination on the other side of the road, so your friend asks you, “Ooper Say Ghuma Kay Lay aa.”
When Things Go Wrong
Sometimes, unexpected things happen—on the pitch and the road!
- “Ye Tow Bara Scene Ho Gaya!” – When you lose a very close match or get runout at a crucial stage, remember the 1999 Semifinal between Australia and South Africa?, or a catch is dropped- of a good batsman – while on the other hand, you see an accident on the road, these words automatically come out of your mouth.
- “Andha hai Bhae?” – This is the most common phrase on the road when someone changes lanes suddenly, gets too close to you, or comes the wrong way; you can only say these words while on the cricket ground when your friend misfields or drops a catch or just waves bat without looking at the ball, you automatically shout “Andha Hay Bhae?”
Celebratory Remarks
Whether you hit a perfect shot or smoothly overtake another car, celebrations are a must!
- “Kya Zabardast Drive Hai!” – When you see a beautiful shot from a very stylish batsman, imagine Babar Azam, the bat’s sound, the feet movement, the bat lift, everything is just gorgeous, or you saw someone driving effortlessly, moving in the traffic smoothly, you have to praise and say “Kya Drive Hay Yaar.”
- “Bhai, aj Tow Form Maen Hay!” –When your friend is playing like a professional batsman, hitting the bowlers all around the ground, timing the ball perfectly, reminds us of Shahid Afridi’s innings against India in 2014 Asia Cup, Meanwhile, on the road, he is driving like a pro, getting all green signals, avoiding the traffic challans, the phrase naturally comes out, “Jani Aj Tow Tu Sahi Form Maen Hay.”
