Toyota Just Gave a Great News to Its Users
In a great news, Toyota has announced to public its collision test software, Total Human Model for Safety (THUMS), for its consumers across the world. According to the Japanese automaker, the facility will be available from January 2021, as consumers can simulate and analyze vehicle collisions for free.
THUMS Software:
THUMS is a virtual human body model software program for computer analysis of human body injuries caused in a vehicle collision. Free access, and subsequent use by a wide variety of consumers, is expected to increase vehicle safety. At the time of its launch in 2000, the software was the world’s first virtual human body model software.
In a statement, the company said this free offer is expected to “improve the usability of the software, as users make improvements to the model themselves and share the results with others.”
Earlier, the company has given the software access to over 100 universities, research institutes, its suppliers, and automakers. Toyota took this step so that these entities can develop safety technology such as airbags and seatbelts. The company believes this software can analyze collision-related injuries in more detail as compared to standard crash tests where human dummies are used.
Since last year, the Japanese company is opening access to its technology to the world instead of keeping it a secret. In 2019, the company allowed free access to its 24, 000 patents for electric vehicles. The access was given to fuel cell vehicles and electric hybrids. It is also expected that public use of this software will increase its mobility as people will make improvements to the model themselves.
The developers of the software have said that they have been making constant improvements and fervently working to reproduce anatomy of the human body. The developers are also working on expanding the variations of this software.
Final Verdict:
This step by Toyota company will surely help public and common users in understanding the mechanics of vehicle safety. The public will also understand the importance of seatbelts and airbags in cars, leading to life safety.
