Q. What is gift scheme? How is a car imported through gift scheme?

Ans. Gift scheme was introduced to allow overseas Pakistani’s to export the vehicle to their family. Under gift scheme, passenger cars excluding 4×4 vehicles and pickups/trucks/buses can be imported to Pakistan. The car should not be older than three years from the date of manufacture (36 months). Moreover, a person willing to import his/her car to Pakistan must have stayed a minimum of 700 days outside Pakistan during the immediately preceding three years from the date of application. Through gift scheme, Car can be gifted to a family member (who is a permanent resident of Pakistan) i.e.

Q. I am shifting back to Pakistan. Can I bring my car from abroad?

Ans. Yes, it is possible for an overseas Pakistani to bring his/her car to Pakistan through ‘Transfer of Resident Scheme’. The vehicle being imported through a transfer of resident scheme should be a passenger car excluding 4×4 vehicles, buses, vans and trucks. The car should not be more than three years old from the date of manufacture. Moreover, the importer should have stayed a minimum of 700 days outside Pakistan preceding three years from the date of application.

Q. Is it possible to import a car older than three years?

Ans. Legally, it is not allowed to import a car that is older than 3-years, calculated from the date of manufacture. However, the age limit for buses, trucks and other HTV’s is 5-years.

Q. I went abroad one year ago for studies, and now I am returning after completion of the study. Can I bring my car along?

Ans. A student who was receiving finance from Pakistan during his/her stay abroad is not eligible to import a car in terms of condition-2 of Appendix-G of Import Trade and Procedure Order. If you were not receiving any financial aid from Pakistan, you are eligible to import your car to Pakistan. The clause states, “A student receiving remittance from Pakistan during his stay abroad is not eligible to import a car.”

Q. What do I check before buying a Japanese car?

Q. Is it possible to import a car without an engine?

Ans. Yes, it is possible to import a car without the engine. However, the same policies and import duties would be applicable.

Q. What if I do not pay the import duty of my car at Karachi port?

Ans. There is a time duration of 3 months from the unloading date to clear out your outstanding import dues. On completion of 3-months, the car is put up for auction. And if the car is sold after the it has been put up for auction, the importer can get it cleared after paying port fines.

Q. What if the car gets damaged during shipment from Japan to Karachi?

Ans. If you are importing a car yourself, you can hire an insurance company to claim any kind of damages during shipment to Karachi Port. The damaged part can be claimed at Karachi Port after the arrival of the car. Apart from the car auction, some Japanese car export companies also provide insurance facility.
