Tesla Launches Model S P100D – The Fastest Car Anyone Can Buy!

Tesla Motors and their CEO Elon Musk have finally unveiled the long rumored 100-kWh batteries for both Model S and Model X. Normally I would shuffle the summary of the details, I would follow in my piece but as the ‘headline’ suggests this is no ordinary news so straight to the good stuff.

Just a little less than two years back, Tesla showed off the Model S P85D, then fastest four-door production car ever sold. And if neither P85D nor P90D were quick enough for you, the new battery pack can now take the 5+2 seater Model S rocketing from standstill to 100km/h in a matter of 2.5 seconds; making Model S, the fastest-accelerating mass produced car ever and the fourth fastest to ever go on sale.

Overall it’s only behind the three ultra-expensive hyper-cars, Porsche 918 Spyder (2.2 seconds), Bugatti Chiron (2.4 seconds) and Ferrari LaFerrari (2.4 seconds) all three of them cost multiple times more than the Tesla and are produced in limited quantities. To put it into perspective, only 918 Porsche 918 Spyders would ever be built; Bugatti Chiron is limited to 500 and Ferrari LaFerrari will be available to 499 customers. While on the other hand, Model S P100D being a mass-produced luxury sedan can be bought by anyone who has the money i.e. $134,500. Even more so importantly, in the ‘top 5’ Model S P100D remains the only car which can be purchased ‘new’ since all of the other four have reportedly been sold out meaning that even if you have the money to pay the price, buying a used one will be your only resort.

The new battery pack joins the line-up of 60-kWh, 75-kWh and 90-kWh batteries, making it the one with the highest capacity; around 10% more than the previous highest. Keeping with Tesla’s consistent variant naming scheme, both Model S and X’s 100-kWh variants will be called the ‘P100D’. In addition to making the already ludicrous mode even more ludicrous, the 100-kWh battery now gives Model S, a range of 507-km over thirty-four kilometers more than the 90-kWh 473-km range. Subsequently, Model X P100D will be able to go on for 465-km without needing a recharge, up from the 402-km range of its P90D sibling.

Seeing Model S P100D, a car which clocks weighing scales at 2.3-tonnes plus and can seat up to five adults and two children at the same-time coming with a 0-100-km/h time, which takes hyper-cars to shame, I wonder what may happen if Tesla now, with all its battery and motor profess goes on to make a super-car of its own.
