I love quirky cars. Cars with panache and flair and drama. In some cases, I've been guilty of adding these qualities (good, bad AND ugly) to some of the cars I've rebuilt. Flames on an Impala. Four doors on an FJ40. Twin turbos in a Mustang. You get the idea.
The Baggy is a quirky car all on its own. Out of the box. Three-abreast seats, rear engined, rear wheel drive, fiberglass body. You mentioned how it beat out competition for being the most beautifully designed car (notable amongst its competitors, the Ferrari 308, Alfa Romeo Montreal, Lamborghini Urraco, and Maserati Merak)...and yet, the same year it also won the Silberne Zitrone (Silver Lemon) award for the worst manufactured car in the world.
40 years from its birth, when there are very few of these cars left over in the world...these good and bad accolades add to the car's character, in my opinion. It doesn't hurt its case either, that when you look at the car you can't really figure out exactly what it is. I think we're lucky that this little beauty managed to survive the odds in Pakistan in the very first place. Let's hope she gets 'rebirthed' befittingly, too. That'd be the ultimate thumbs-up for a car that was simultaneously considered one of the best and worst of its times.
