I would associate my passion for Beetles to a very Dear Friend. At the time when we could hardly afford to keep Motor cycles as students he somehow got a rumbler tumbler of a Beetle. It's Roof used to come off in four pieces and used to be fixed with some sort of clamps, it had it's more than fair share of issues. However whatever condition it was in it was a car. It made us feel like big boys :), after some time it went and and then came a Black 1302 again bought by my Dear friend...it was again a "chaltee ka naam gaaree". Late one night when we were coming back from a friend's sisters Mehndi one of the rear wheels came off we panicked but only as much as we would have panicked had the tyre pressure gone down a bit. We put on the tyre again and off we went such were the care free days.
As I write I realize that it would take many pages to breifly discuss all the Beetles and the several stories associated with them and to recall all the interesting people that we came across so better come straight to the Beetle in question. By 2009 I had a 1969 Deluxe Beetle and this friend had a mint 1977 UN Auctioned standard Beetle and a veryyyy original 1971 Super Beetle. All stickers in place, excellent super quiet and responsive engine, the click of the doors was music to the years, it had that typical original smell also.
In 2009 I went to perform Hajj and in Arafat you are supposed to make Duaa from approximately Zuhar time to Maghrib (Afternoon to late evening). After having prayed for all that I could think of I said to Allah mujhe aik Super Beetle bhee dilwaa de which is as good as the one my friend has. It is considered a sin if you think that a Duaa that you make in Arafat will not be fulfilled.
Back I came to Pakistan and within few days my friend calls me up and says that his Super Beetle is rusting away as he does not have time to restore or drive it around. So instead of selling it to someone and then lamenting he asked me if I wanted it as a Gift. I thought he would change his mind as before that he did not have any intention of letting it go. However he insisted and late one night I went to his palce, we jump started it and brought it to my place. Hence the name Divine Beetle.
