YONGKANG, Zhejiang, China — The home province of Chinese automaker Geely is a hotbed of aspiring Chinese car manufacturers these days. One with big ambitions is Zhejiang TechNew Group, which has just introduced the Zotye2008 sport-utility vehicle through its Zotye Auto company.
If the exterior appearance and key dimensions of the Zotye2008 seem familiar, it may be that the company took a very thorough look at the Daihatsu Terios, which is also being produced in China. Zotye Auto claims the design was done in-house, but reportedly with the participation of an Italian company.
The Zotye2008 is powered by a four-cylinder, 1.6-liter Mitsubishi engine and retails for under $7,500, which is about half the asking price for the Terios in China. To put it into perspective, it is almost as cheap as a Suzuki minicar. No word on the quality, though. Standard equipment includes ABS, a CD player with MP3, central locking, and power windows.
There's no word on how many Zotye2008 models will be made this year, but the company has outlined an ambitious export plan, including dealerships in South America, the Middle East, and Russia
What this means to you: Keep watching these cut-price Chinese cars. They may not be here today, maybe not tomorrow, but one of these days….
