One57 is a tower under construction on 57th Street in Manhattan. I drive by this everyday. You will not believe from basement to this stage just in 2 years. Still few floors to go.. Due to lot of regulations, construction with on a busy streets down, schedules are very tight and you work under certain timetable during duration of day.. All workers go through a 2 weeks course on safety. Even visitors have to go for a three hour training before they can go inside the under construction tower.
The work on tower started again after many months. The tower was under media attention when Hurricane Sandy toppled the tower crane. Being an Engineer myself.. These towers fascinates me so much, took a picture thought share it.. Picture from my moon roof

In china they build such buildings in like 6 months....but ya due to traffic and safety regulations its not easy to maintain this kinda progress. Back in late 90's I had to pass something like 5 or 6 safety tests and numerous presentations and lessons before they let me enter Chevron refinery in LA. Building construction was still not that strict about safety till early 2000's as I worked on Walt Disney 12 storey building for a few months w/o any safety trainings. Just a safety induction of 15 min was all that needed at that time. It seems things have changed for good since then.

buildings reaching 90 floors are quite common in Dubai. I saw the princess tower in marina after read an urdu article that it costs equivalent to 37 billion rupees to build 110 floors are sold out.

LOL so true! Many of Dubai's skyscrapers do indeed have questionable aesthetics, and the whole place looks like one big expensive theme park. Hideous, IMHO.

Sir dry wall is just the infill. The structure is on concrete or steel columns. drywall are not load bearing in all construction.

Dry wall is user everywhere which are nailed to studs.

99% are overseas. Architect design on the basis of owners requirement. If the owner want something.. Architect somewhat express that.. Its same you can find a gold plsted and diamond fixed mercedes in UAE.. Its owners choice.. Burj Khalifa the tallest have engineers from Chicago.. Lot of things go on board before going final design. Sometimes , rather most of times the draft design takes longer then its construction time..

Yes of course, the core and load bearing members are all steel + concrete construction. I was talking about the tackiness of the internal (and obviously non-load bearing) dry walls that are usually wafer thin and provide zero sound insulation. To me, that's tacky.

Yup, I'm well aware of that. I question any architect who bows down to his/her client's demand(s), often times massively compromising on the aesthetics of his or her design(s). Re: The Burj Khalifa - SOM didn't once compromise on their designs FYI.

In fact, pre war structures had great insulation from sound. It's the newer buldings that are the problem. Most buildings and condos in Manhattan/downtown Brooklyn/LIC have the same problem, including the CiTicorp bulding.

^ well you are right.. Its a compromise. SOM did not compromise . One reason is SOM is also structural engineer on the tower. Now they have extra powers on the project.. All these towers are their bread and butter. Once a project approve.. They release the renderings for it. People see and comment. Architect and engineer gathers positive info and try to see if an opinion is good or bad. Its like a proto type or concept car an auto show..
No all knows about the abstract art. But those who know loves something , though same very thing will be ugly or useless to the other eye.
