Good one! Will try to read through completely and make more sense of it, but its the same argument that some friends of mine often pose to me i.e. "How come the UN cars never sport wider tires?"
While answering that question I think the article also points out the flip sidewhen highlighting benefits of wider tires : "Greater high speed handling safety and improved lateral traction on constructed roads (concrete, asphalts, etc.), greater section width for support of the heavy vehicle on soft terrain, and [ofcourse :)] appearance."
Being a safety buff these days, I would rather sacrifice some speed to ensure that my Jeep stays upright at all times...but then thats just me. More later...
