Here is a cut n paste of the list I was composing for Dp:
@ devilspassion (and whoever is planning a brake overhaul on their bug)
Here is a list of parts you might be needing:
(I always get all the parts that could possibly turn out bad as then I donât have to run to get anything mid procedure. Any remaining parts can be returned or kept in your âspares binâ for future needs)
1--Brake fluid. At least two bottles as you would be bleeding the system too. Always buy the same brand that you have been putting over the years. A change of brand can result in leakage of the rubber seals.
2âBrake reservoir pipe. You get this from Cheap autos/local VW store. A length of around two to three feet should be sufficient.
3âJubilee clips for the reservoir pipe. At least six to eight.
4âPlastic nipple which makes connection to the master cylinder port possible. These are rarely bad but if it is then you get it from only the VW shop. You need two if the master cylinder is a dual circuit one.
5âRubber grommet for the plastic nipple to go into. Again two if dual circuit.
6âMaster cylinder kit. In the worst case scenario you may need a new cylinder but lets not be too pessimistic.
7âBrake slave/wheel cylinder washers. Set of eight, two for each wheel. Buy the correct ones for your model as there are differences.
8âSlave cylinder bleeding nipples. These might break while the brakes are being bled as they can be jammed quite hard. Buy four as they would only cost around Rs 100/- but save you a BIG headache.
9âBrake shoe linings. A set of Brazil made linings would be nice. Buy the ones correct for your model along with the rivets. You can then get it riveted from a shop near you or if you are too adventurous do it yourself!
10âlocking pins for the rear drum nut. You may be able to use the old ones but why take the risk?
11âwe might end up damaging some hard brake lines, or find one leaking but we can get those from nearby ordinary spares shops.
Tools and stuff you would need:
Basic hand toolsâŚ..assorted spanners, screw drivers, a medium sized pipe wrenchâŚ.comes in handy for stubborn slave cylinder nipples.
You would also need some emery/sandpaper, rags and grease.
One special tool you need is a 36/38 mm socket wrench along with a good handle and cheater pipe. Essential for the rear drums if you donât fancy the desi chisel and hammer approach. Ill lend mine for this project so donât worry about finding one. Just remind me to bring it along please.
Lets seeâŚhave I forgotten anything??? Ah yesâŚ..gallons of ice cream of assorted flavors for the supervisor!!
