Default Daihatsu Charade 86 (G11) Maintenance

    Dear Pak Wheelers!

I have bought a charade this week. I will be posting pictures soon. Want to recondition it. Willing to allocate some budget on that. Details are following:

    Daihatsu Charade 1986 (G-11)
Engine: 993cc (changed once with same specs.) very good condition
Interior: Original dashboard, frame, meter, doors
    Exterior: Painted
Tyres: Good condition with alloys rims
    Steering Wheel italian sports.
    Petrol/CNG with good consumption.

    Please experts answer my question:

    1. Steering wheel (sports) is very hard. Indicators don't go off automatically. What can be issue?

    2. Front right tyre is one centimeter outside alignment
(Wheel alignment persons said that the tyre needs to by aligned from lower body (floor) by pressing it inside and then rod will be used to fix both level. What should be done in that case?)

    3. Brake pedal vibrates when I accelerate the car on speed 50 or greater and apply brakes. What is issue?

    4. When I take sharp turns I feel some sound of tuc.. tuc .. just one or two (may be because of alignment or front right wheel).

    5. Radiator fan is always ON. Heat gauge never goes up. What should be done?

    6. Reverse gear back light not working. Need some kind of switch with the reverse gear. Indicator goes off sometimes. Should I go for full electrical wiring change? Is that feasible?

Please refer to Good/Reliable mechanic in RWP/ISLAMABAD.

    Thanks.

    Hassan

your problems in your order are

1 change the steering wheel for the original size one - along with its little indicator cancel wheel at the back (the original larger wheel gives more leverage hence feels easy)
2 - I believe your springs are sagging or the previous owner tried to adjust camber with ground down bolts - a good alignment shop can fix that too
3 - Check the whole front end bushes and joints for loose freeplay - replace as necessary - and tighten the steering rack float
4 - Your CV joint boots are torn or the joints themselves are worn out - replace and fill genuine black CV joint grease
5 - The fan is hot wired "direct" to the ignition - this can be remedied with a working thermosensor (near the plunger fuel pump) and a new thermostat installed on the upper water flange - check the whole system for tiny leaks etc.. and fill coolant in the end - your heat gauge should be 1/4 at least and the fan kicks on near to half
6 - The reverse gear light is activated by a switch on the transmission - its cheap and can be replaced easily.. best to change it when you are changing the transmission oil, as it is at the very bottom, the oil will drain out too. Get a very good electrics person/shop - the charade wiring is dead nuts easy to understand and fix

Thank you Xulfiqar for such detailed reply.

For point number 2 (The tyre aligned out from actual location)
I consulted an alignment shop. After examining the floor he said the floor is too old now and this is main reason of relocation of the tyre. A denter will bring it to original location.

Today I consulted denter in Islamabad. He said he will be getting Rs. 2500 to bring the tyre to original location.

Tomorrow I plan to go to another Wheel alignment and denter shop.

    Thank you for your help.

    I am very depressed ...
Mechanics, Electrician played everything worst they could do with my charade.

Denter has aligned the tyre but the car is now in worst condition.
I wanted to fix some wiring to get indicators, lights and CD player working .. nothing is working properly now..
Even speedometer is not working now ..
Now I have contacted Daihatsu company for repairs/maintenance.

Bro what you need is a good mechanic. Go to "Sultan dee Khuie" and search for a Charade specialist.

As for alignment issue, I believe you have a "camber" issue. This can be resolved in 3 ways:

    1) Modify the lower holes of the front shocks to allow a bit of travel. Make sure to install bolts with grooves on those to avoid slippage. Have the camber adjusted from a competent person. I could send you to someone in Lahore but you will need Pindi member's help in your case.
    2) Install strut plates, butI don't think anyone in Pakistan knows how to do that.
    3) Have the denter weld and reshape the lower end of the "Gaatri". This is the part in G11 Charades which develops cracks due to wear and tear. You will still need to do any of the above methods to adjust the camber.

Let me know if need any more help.

    1. Steering wheel (sports) is very hard. Indicators don't go off automatically. What can be issue?

Ans: Switch to stock steering wheel. The indicator hooks must be disconnected/removed. Open the enclosure behind the steering wheel (there are 2 screws which hold it in place below the enclosure) and examine. Lubricate and apply WD 40 while your'e at it.

    2. Front right tyre is one centimeter outside alignment
(Wheel alignment persons said that the tyre needs to by aligned from lower body (floor) by pressing it inside and then rod will be used to fix both level. What should be done in that case?)

Ans: Check my post for the answer.

    3. Brake pedal vibrates when I accelerate the car on speed 50 or greater and apply brakes. What is issue?

Ans: Front brake discs must be warped. Get them faced or replaced.

    4. When I take sharp turns I feel some sound of tuc.. tuc .. just one or two (may be because of alignment or front right wheel).

Ans: This could be due to a number of reasons. Goaday, Bushes, ball joints or steering ends.

    5. Radiator fan is always ON. Heat gauge never goes up. What should be done?

Ans: Install the radiator fan switch which is located near the upper hose connection with the engine. Also install the thermostat which is located inside the hose connecter. Remove the breather pin from the thermostat before installing it.

    6. Reverse gear back light not working. Need some kind of switch with the reverse gear. Indicator goes off sometimes. Should I go for full electrical wiring change? Is that feasible?

Ans: The reverse gear switch is at the front of the gearbox at the bottom, you can see it from the front of the car. You need to have the genuine connector for that, otherwise you will have issue in the rain. Complete wiring is feasible only if you can get a hold of the original Charade wiring without any cuts. DO NOT have an electrician make it for you.

    Thanks.

Dear brother .. your posts are great help indeed. Thank you very much.

In the recent past my car gone through alarming situations. I tried many things and mechanics/denters ...

Alignment issue goes over the head of every1 ..

actually 2 different denters located "hisa" out of alignment and they fixed that issue. Apparently frame alignment is fixed.

But after repeated car alignment/camber adjustments tyres give strange angle when car is turned to extreme right or left .. and front wheels jump when u take sharp extreme slow turns. Car moves towards right when you leave the steering.

unfortunately, there are lots of other issues.
Because car floor is almost rusted so I have some future plans:

Please let me know if following is possible:

    1. Changing/fixing floor including where lower frames in which helping rods are fixed, which joins steering rod with wheels.
Please guide me what to do if I want to protect the floor from rust. (Sheet or something).

    2. Full denting n painting.

    3. Also I have front shocks of starlet. Which I will change from 88 charade shocks.

Dear bro you seem quite resourceful person here on PW .
I understand you are in Lahore but still I would ask for any authentic(not very expensive) mechanic reference in Pindi.

    Regards.

    Sorry for the late reply.

Bro from what I have read here, you do not seem to have a good mechanic. First, you need to find a good workshop; I am sure Pindi/Islu members should be able to guide you in the right direction.

Yes, floors can be replaced but you need to cover it with good quality primer and paint, and later, a coat of that black coal tar like thing under the floor.`
