Look around for someone, its not that hard either, you would need an awl, leather thread and needle and a candle to wax the thread. (cobbler tools)
I practiced on a broom handle and then refinished a few in Pakistan too. I used black dyed calf hide and red thread then stitched it like baseball (american) style with 2 needles.
The european style actually is stiching two stiches together. I did not have that kind of machine or thread with me.
To get the edge flush and perfect fit you need to cut the steering wheel material axially about 2mm wide, this is done to tuck the edge folds in it. The awl is used to make holes in the skin first.
Now if a goof like me with shrek hands can do it - so can you.
