Default Speedometer Problem Civic Auto Transmission 97

I have been experiencing erratic behaviour with my speedometer needle since last night when it came back from mechanic after have a radiator changed and a driving side window motor change.

At times it seems to work for a short while and then degrades down to zero. When it works the speed it shows is perfect. I drove about 100Kms today and the trip meter shows about 10Kms that means it worked only 10% during different journeys.

I went back to the mechanic. they put the cars front wheel on jack and accelerated it in D4 and it even went uptill 120km/h and dropped down again (the same behaviour which i described above). Then the took out a long bar type thing with sprockets on it from the hood and said that it is fine from there as they turn the sporket with hand manually the speedometer needle goes up.

So what they concluded is that there is a fault in some sproket from gear box. The gearbox is automatic so they dont want to open it. It was working perfectly two days back and all of the sudden after they fixed two things this thing is happening.

What things can be checked for this fault? Gear box opening is kinda risky especially for auto transmission.

I am very frustrated now (Plz help)

i found this on an american site. Can this be related to my cars problrm as well?

Question: 2002 Honda Accord mileage: 61,000. Hello Bob & Ken, My Accord has developed a problem. At a constant speed, the speedometer will start fluctuating. It will drop to zero. Then the transmission sensor light starts flashing and the speedometer go back to normal. The car seems to run fine. I took it to my mechanic within the first week, but he could not identify the problem. I hope you can give me some insight and estimated costs of repair.

Answer: A faulty signal generator in the transmission may be the cause of your problem.

I have a 1993 Honda Civic dx, 157000 miles. The speedometer has been working off and on (now mostly not working) as well as the odometer just stopped working. Could the problem be with the cable?
If so how do I locate the cable to check for corrosion.
    Thanks

I think! instead of looking for a cable , you'll be looking for the VSS Vehicle Speed Sensor at the transmission-take it out, key in On position, spin the the sensor the speedo should fluctuate then come back

it can also be a speed senser problem. as when it sends the signals the needle goes to the speed at which the car is running and drops down when the sensor stops working.

It is just my thought can be something else also.

speedo meter i dont think so there is any sensor its all manual, when i use to have my BMX bicycle i fixed a meter in it it was connected with the wheel and as the wheel moves forward the wire which is connected to the meter moves(actually in the wire there was another wire which goes in the meter connected from wheel) going faster moves that square shaped wire moves it was 95% correct.

yes you found the answer.. there is no cable.. its electronic speedomter,, there is a wire loose somewhere,, maybe somebody working in engine with tools hit something/pushed or pulled.. here we need to read Honda speedometer connection setup before going further digging in car.

probably @levin is right. since ur car is visiting workshops daily, the mechanic fiddled something. loose connection.
Take ur car to Honda Pit stops and ask them what can be the problem. they know where what to check actually

    @all

I went to Honda Pit Stop and they checked a bit and said the electrical clamps/wirings are ok so there should be a fault in either the front gear/sprocket of the speed senser or the defferential gear. I asked them to check the engine check ligt error but they were too busy to do that.

Then he said that this is an auto transmission and if there is a fault in the sprocket of the differntial it will need 1 whole day to solve the problem.

I stayed there, called an uncle, he called someone at Atlas Honda City Sales. then that person called me and asked me that he wanted to talk to the mechanic who is incharge at the pit stop and i handed over the phone to him and you know what the mehcanic refferd me to the same workshop from where I am getting my workdone already. He said we get all our tricky electronic work done from Naeem Jaan.

The same thing happened with my friend with his Toyota Hilux Over Drive Sensor Issue and Toyota Garden Motors called the same guy for trouble shooting, after Toyota Mechanics messed up with the engine for whole one week.

Anyway, I called him again in frustration but didnt tell him about the Honda pit Shop comments neither told him that I went to Honda.

He said dont worry, he will call me in free time and will fix this thing up personally.

That is summary of whole day.
