    Default Corolla Altis VVTi 1.8 Feedback Please

    Hello everybody,

    Being a lover of fast cars, I am considering to buy an Altis. I recently purchased my new XLi but am not satisfied with it's pickup.

    I know that Altis is not as fast item as Saloon or GLi/XLi but would like to know about:

    1. Its pickup ... acceleration
    2. Braking
    3. Handling, specially above 120 KM/Hr
    4. Suspension response on bumpy roads (I have found that the suspension of my XLi is not that superior and seems to be transferring the jerks on to the person onboard).

    Any feedback in this regard based on live experience would be highly appreciated!

    Regards.
    .

    @YasserY, thanks for your prompt reply! I have a Gli 1.3, which has done its share and am thinking of selling it and replacing with an Altis. Brakes have always been an issue..how is the braking with ABS? And last question(I've tried to be as epigrammatic as i can)...how's the handling at high speeds? Thanks dude,

    Respected FX Genius,
    Altis is a good car when you consider the fact that it's an 1800cc car and has all the options that one could think of including the air bag. If you have a budget of around 14.25, then I can give you a 1.8 VVTL-i engined Corolla Runx. one thing about the Runx which is noticeable is that although it has a sports engine, it ain't no gas guzzler and can be used on a daily basis,air bags,6 speed manual and it's stock 195hp. So, if you are interested then do lemme know.

    Regards

    GLI:

    I have discussed the brakes on other threads but I'll summarize for you: they are excellent. Whether its straight line or lateral breaking, or breaking in emergency situations, the ABS has performed superbly. I have driven the present Vti (manual and prosmatech) extensively, and the brakes are at least as responsive and smooth as the breaks in the Civic. AT LEAST. Breaking does not force the car to move to any one side (as some people have asserted)and depending on the skill of the driver deceleration from high speeds and turn-off can be done seamlessly.

    Similarly, handling at high speeds (I have been up to just 160 and would not recommend that you spend too much time upwards of that speed in any car!) is completely assured. Though here I would stress that getting new tyres and rims makes a difference in the braking, handling and drive of the car. If you get the Altis you must be prepared to atleast get new tires (195 or 205) if not new rims as well.

    @FX Genius

    i recently bought Altis in January, 06. its manual transmission and in flexin mica colour. the car has 2,000kms on the odometer. just like u, i am also a fast car enthusiast and i also bought Altis after asking the Altis owners similar questions

    would like to convey my findings as below:

    1. The pickup is quiet good under most rpm ranges. the overall acceleration and especially the torque is better than Vti. however the car is more noisy under hard acceleration than i expected it to be. its more noisy than SE saloon or Gli when accelerating hard.

    2. braking is good and its better than SE saloon as it has improved with the addition of ABS. however, i must say that they are still not as responsive as that of civic Vti.

    3. Handling: well this is area where i have my reservations. i have 205/60 15" yokohama tyres but even with these tyres the grip and handling is not that re-assuring. the steering feels too light at high speeds which shakes confidence.

    4. suspension is a bit hard compared to civic but most bumps are well taken and are absorbed by the rugged suspension.

    I have given u a fair and unbiased opinion. hope it will help u make your decision.

    @mazher
    agree with your 3rd point about the handling in high speeds, the 2003 rolla also had the same problem.

    As for your 1st point, thats the beauty of the VVt-i engine when you push the rev's the engines opens up for more acceleration and speed.

    Dear Mazhar, YasserY and zwk35 thanks a lot for your live experience based feedback, they really worth making decision and now I am going to change my third car with 3 months period. From Indus Corolla first batch 1993 (which I bought new) to Baleno, from Baleno to XLi and now from XLi to Altis!!!

    Now I can only pray to God that this car must satisfy my NEED FOR SPEED!

    Though I normally drive faster, but I can't really resist when a chap comes to challenge me, even when I am with my family. During the race I tell them to just keep their mouths shut and enjoy the race and condemn me in worst possible words later. And later I too join them condemning myself!

    Anyway its a fun, very hard to resist, with the passage of time, I may have better control on myself.

    Be ready to Congratulate me when I will buy Altis.

    babaromar though I am not in the favor of buying imported car, but I may change my opinion, if I like the looks of your car, please upload a few photographs of it, thanks.

    Well so much for the praise for altis, ok it has a VVTi engine and ABS, but it's still the corolla that we all know has pathetic built quality, buy a cae that is worth above a million rupees, and u end up with a piece of crap that can't hold itself together...... driving the present corolla, one feels like sitting on a toilet seat with a plate in his hand..... if u need a good car, u would have to buy an imported one.... so much for patriotism when u have to be looted to be patriotic.......

    @babaromar

    Bhai, I am sorry, but honestly I don't like small cars, specially withhout truck, it does not give the look of a complete car. And, above all due to it's size and look, it does not worth spending 1.4 million rupees, this is atleast me opinion.

    Anyway, thanks for the suggestion/offer.

    Aslamualikum!
    I own Altis. I have owned Xeg and Vti as well. ALtis has definate better acceleration good for those who need speed than Vti. Its fuel consumption is also very good being 1800cc but a little more than Vti. Its handling and braking is exceptionally good. Being heavier than the se saloon its road grip is improved. it creates more noise than vti and se saloon when pushed hard on the rpms which gives you a better feel. A/c is far better than vti and the mp3 player and speakers are good. It is faster than vti, bigger than vti and have better resale value than vti... in 1,219,000 is a worth buy than a vti. It takes you to 160km/hr in less than half a minute. Its great and it feels great to drive something superior on the road knowing that you are driving the best powerful car in the class.. On karachi hyderabad highway vti struggled against Altis in accleration in every gear shift.. gear box is better than vti and the shifting smooth.. Iwould recommend Altis which gives you a proud feeling on the red light than you are the fastest amoung the most local cars....

    Altis is not noiser at high RPMS.
    Its sexier at higher RPMS. That sound is an addiction to the driver.
    If you walk away from your car and don't look back, you have bought the wrong car.
