    Default corolla n civic RPM hopping

    i was just getting curious abt the RPM status of these two cars. i noticed that civic's (exi)RPM roams around 4000 at 100 km/hr in 4th gear. contrary to that, corollas RPM (even Altis) hovers around 3000 for 100km/hr. i know it has to do wid gear ratios but wont it result in more fuel consupmtion? (civic) n y it is like this?

    design feature yar. Ofcourse is cos of gear ratio but dosnt necessarily means higher fuel consumption. At higher speeds consumption is more of a function of drag and static friction of car and not the RPM.

    also depende on the bore and stroke ratio, Honda may have a shorter stroke and bigger bore, this will require more RPM's comparatively for same output.

    @spectra
    Thanks. I altogether missed out that possibility. Also bigger bore allows for larger valves which in turns gives better performance at high rpms. Also it gives flatter and broader torque/power curve throughout rpm range of the engine. Thats y F1 engines have very high bore/stroke ratio (in the range of 1.6) and hence idle at 5000 rpm and goes to 19000 rpm. amazing isnt it?

    @alcapone
    Static friction is due mechanical factors like bearings, differiancial, gearbox and tires ect. Drag is due to aerodynamic friction of air.

    i said "under normal driving conditions"
    n even the civic's manual says dat 1st gear at 20 2nd at 40 3rd at 55 n 5th gear at 80.......
    so if u want the rpm needle for an exi at 3 while doin 100km/h u sud be driving in the 5th gear....
    yea i kno dat u can touch 100 on the 2nd gear but in dat way u wil **** up wid ur engine........
