    Default Shell Ultra (fully synthetic) in VXLi -any issues?

    Since Shell Advance Plus (blue) is not available these days, can i switch to Shell Ultra for Cultus VXLi (petrol only)? any known/ expected issues associated with the switchover from semi synthetic to fully synthetic engine oil?

    I have had a bad experience with Shell Ultra. I put it in my brand new santro and I was thinking of changing it after 10,000 km but when I routinely checked it after 7,500 km it had no lubrication and it was very dark in colour. I immediately changed it. Now I m happy with havoline 10w30, which lasts for more than 5000 km.

    @ fouadabid:

    Bro i would not recommend adding that oil,but in case of best compatibilty the Shell Helix Super and Shell Helix Plus Oils are a better choice or Havoline Formula or Castrol Magnatec. Small engines IMO are not gonna get a major difference till you want to reduce your engine oil changes ... otherwise no issues except the car can get better synthetic oil like Mobil 1,etc!!!!

    @ all:

    They (SHELL) changed the names! Shell peeps now have new names:

    Shell Helix (Red)=Shell HX3
    Shell Helix Super (Yellow)=Shell HX5
    Shell Helix Plus (Blue)=Shell HX7 Semi Synthetic
    Shell Helix Ultra (Black)=Shell Ultra Fully Synthetic

    I have been using Shell Helix Plus (Blue)=Shell HX7 Semi Synthetic in my XLi and it gives great performance.

    Even I noticed that it cools off the engine more than the regular TMO2000 mineral oil. I change it after 7,000 and it's still in good shape viscosity wise and discolours as it should clean the engine.

    This one is the most cost effective mid-range oil at slightly more price than minerals and advantage of semi-synthetic oil.

    @Hash it will be five year old in Jan. Well the Toyota Motor Oil was recommended for 5,000 Kms and this one is around 7. i did not have full 7K kms and changed it earlier.

    Shell wala was saying that the oil is good for 6k.

    And if I use 10K wala then annual oil change, lol, but oils have shelf life (inside engine) too probably of 90 days or may be 120 days

    A note of caution here, the colour of an oil does not tell the condition of the oil. Some oils have detergents that get darker or "dirtier" in colour fairly quickly. It doesn't mean that they have to be changed, on the other hand, a clean-looking oil doesn't mean that it hasn't picked up contaminants.

    Saaqib Bhai

    We've been using Caltex Delo Gold since the very beginning, but then again, oil change is every 3000 kms...

    @fouadabid
    Much better options then shell helix hx-7(blue pack) are ZIC A plus and GS-oil kixx G1. Both of these have an API rating of SM.

    @storm
    When using synthetic one can always change the oil filter midway between the OCI's to overcome the dusty condition problem.

    @HG
    Honda recommends SJ or higher in civic and city. The API SG rating has been obsolete for over 8yrs. In my opinion you should stay away from anything less than SL and stay away from shell altogether. If you want to use local oils then go with Havoline formula and if you are comfortable with imported ones then there are much better options out there which cost more or less the same.

    I use Castrol GTX after using all sort of oils including the high end ones that include Semi synthetic.

    Though its only API SG but i think the oil is much better than most oils i have used. I feel this after using this engine gives low noise and the oil level never drops.

    Good morning startup even in 0c.

    And its cheap to just 800Rs for 3L.

    I change it after every 2500 to 3000.

    Hi, in my Cultus VXR 2007 I used Castrol Magnetic and it has done about 9000 Kms till now and this oil is best for approx 15000 Kms. But need to change oil filter at every 10000 Kms otherwise filter get chock and effects the engine. For my Margalla 1996 I use PSO Carient Plus and that is good for 5000 Kms.
