Default Advice on restoring Toyota FJ40

    Hi Guys,

I am in the process of restoring an army auctioned FJ40. I have rebuilt the original F series petrol engine and 3 speed gear box. Axles, brakes, and clutch have also been rebuilt. Body sheet metal has been preped for paint to my satisfaction. In a week or so it will be painted (Insh'Allah) with Standox 2k "baked paint".

However, wiring, suspension, and final touches and refinement can only be done by a proper "Jeep ka mechanic". I may also need help in converting to power steering as I plan on running extra wide tires (15 inch rims with 10inch width). I plan on lifting the vehicle 3 to 4 inches. Can someone suggest a workshop or mechanic in Lahore that can help me complete the task.

    Experts out there...kindly help.

    Regards,

    Salman Chaudhry (03009422749)

Humm you are right...I never thought of it in that way before. Upto this point it is all original...even seats . I am looking for a good FJ40 steering column .

I was able to get the overhaul kit for the old single barrel carburator. However, the local parts guy is having trouble tracing the slow jet switch. He has asked me to give him a few days to locate the part. Dunno if he will be able to trace it. The one he had in stock was for the newer double barrel carb.

Any luck with finding the parts you were looking for? Whats the latest state of your FJ?

    Thanks.

I have decided to keep the FJ40 as stock as possible. This is why I hunted down a set of 5 rims that are almost identical to the OEM deep dish white rims found on later FJ's. The only difference is that I went for 9 inch wide rims instead of the original 5 or 6 inch width. I believe that a set of beefy rims/tires add to a personality and performance of a classic 4x4 instead of taking away from it. I will also be lifting the vehicle a bit to ensure clearance for the wider tires in extreme articulation. Furthermore, I will go for pre-owned tires at this point. Plz let me know if you know of a good place to source pre-owned tires.

Good choice. I think it will look awesome with those sets of wheels and tyres. As for pre-owned tyres, I shall get some details for you soon.

Sir I was very sick. I had fever and upset stomach for the past few days and thus was not online. I guess its because of the cold temprature. Still not fully recovered.

Raza, I hear a lot of good things about your FJ40...I have gotta see it in real life...soon. Lemme get my FJ on the road and will seek your assistance in finetuning it.

Sad to hear that you sold one jeep (BJ40) but atleast the FJ40 will be with you for many years to come. Just for my info and knowledge why did you choose to keep the FJ over the BJ.

At this stage of the FJ40 project I am getting ready to pull my hair out because the mechanics/ workshop are driving me up the wall. I am just waiting for them to finish up a few loose ends and get the jeep rolling, after which I will pull out the Jeep and complete the tasks with the help of you guys.

I will definatley speak to Raza in a day or two and get his advice/ input.

Not to worry, these are typical signs of a 4x4 project at the completion stage. Important to maintain pressure but not to rush things too much owing to frustration with the mechanics.
